Barcelona vs. Manchester United score: Rashford and Raphinha find the net in thrilling Europa League draw

Manchester United and Barcelona locked horns in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday. It was the individual brilliance of Marcus Rashford for the Red Devils and Raphinha for Barca that stole the spotlight in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League knockout playoffs.

After a first half where the teams couldn't finish their chances, the game broke open in a big way with a Marcos Alonso header in the 50th minute, assisted by Raphinha, before Marcus Rashford extended his scoring run and brought United level only three minutes later. Rashford forced Jules Kounde into an own goal before a wicked Raphinha cross evaded everyone to end up in the back of the net for an equalizer. It was quite an open match that both sides will come away feeling like they deserved to win. What we do know is that this sets the stage for an exciting second leg at Old Trafford on Feb. 23 (on Paramount+).

Xavi will have a few worries as Gavi will be suspended for the second clash while Pedri also left the match with an injury. Sergio Busquets is also injured, so it could be a completely different midfield than usual heading to Manchester. Meanwhile, Erik ten Haag will get Lisandro Martinez back from suspension, which will only improve their defensive prospects after allowing Barcelona to control large portions of the opening leg.

The match ending in a draw only makes Wout Weghorst's missed chance in the first half loom larger but at the pace the match was played, it's hard to say that Barcelona wouldn't have found a third goal. Especially since things ended with Casemiro putting a clearance off of his own bar near the end of regulation.

Here's what to know:

Raphinha ran riot

When Raphinha realized that Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw couldn't contain him while also focusing on Robert Lewandowski, the match opened up for Barcelona quickly. Creating one chance that also led to an assist and taking five shots while also occupying central areas of the pitch, Raphinha was at the top of his game to see Barcelona back into the match. He was able to create when he wanted as his pinpoint cross to Alonso for a header was excellent and while his goal should've been an assist to Lewandowski, the ability to put the ball where no one but his teammate could get it is unmatched.

Even if Lewandowski did touch the ball, it would've only needed the slightest poke as Raphinha did all the hard work to create the goal. While things got a little heated after Xavi withdrew him from the match with the Brazillian making sure his displeasure was heard, that's to be expected. Not only was it a competitive match between two excellent teams that no athlete would want to leave willingly but Raphinha has also needed to show why he deserves to start over Ousmane Dembele when he's healthy. Thursday at the Camp Nou, he showed that but now he will need to follow it up with consistent performances in the future.

Manchester United are back

While a large part of why United are where they are is Rashford's 22 goals in all competitions, that alone wasn't enough to draw level with Barcelona. In a short period of time, ten Hag has reinvented the side. No longer are Manchester United pushovers when compared to Europe's best even without being in the Premier League title race. Bringing in winners like Casemiro and Raphael Varane has helped establish a winning culture while removing Cristiano Ronaldo from the team has allowed them to thrive.

Even if Manchester United end up spending more under new ownership, they'll need a careful balance to keep the ethos that ten Hag is building. If they're able to do that, the dark years after Alex Fergeson left the club could soon be behind them. Led by a bonafide homegrown superstar in Rashford, the sky is the limit for the Red Devils.

Can Barcelona cope with injuries to win the tie?

The extent of Pedri's injury is unknown but withdrawn in the first half for Sergi Roberto, Xavi will already be concerned that he won't make the second leg against United. Add in that Sergio Busquets is also injured and forcing him back sooner than required could be a bad idea given how open things were, Barca will have quite the midfield choice to make. Gavi will be suspended and that would mean that Franck Kessie would likely need to anchor the midfield.

A tall task for a player who has only logged 1000 minutes all season and for the most part has seemed to be surplus to requirements. Frenkie de Jong can also contribute at the base of the midfield but that takes away from his best attribute of progressing with the ball at his feet. If Xavi can't figure that out, things could be over before they start.

Well that was an experience

A match that easily could've ended 5-3 either way, both teams left everything on the pitch going for the win. Rashford and Raphinha were excellent as the game ebbed and flowed between both teams figuring each other out and gaining dominance for periods but United will likely be the happier side with the draw. With Gavi suspended and the next leg being at Old Trafford, they now have a good chance to advance to the last 16 of Europa League.

Fati goes for goal

Barcelona are throwing everything forward in the match and they aren't far off from being able to secure an all important goal. Araujo draws a corner with only a minute remaining, is there enough time for a winner?

How did that not end in a goal?

Barcelona struck the post following a free kick and United were somehow able to scramble things clear. It's all Barcelona after the equalizer.

Raphinha may have gotten Barcelona level but he won't finish the match

Ferran Torres has entered and Raphinha isn't happy with the decision as he wanted to finish the match. Will it prove to be the correct decision from Xavi to withdraw his star winger?

RAPHINHA DOES A MADNESS!

This game has everything! It looks like Lewandowski got a touch on Raphinha's wicked cross but it actually evades everyone for an equalizing goal. Still 13 minutes remaining in the match and we could see three more goals at this rate.

Gavi had to foul there but it's a costly one

He takes a tactical foul on Fred to stop United's counter but it will see him suspended for the next leg. With Pedri and Busquets injured, Barcelona could be without a true defensive midfielder for the second leg.

Rashford can score when he wants

Getting in behind Barcelona with each United attack, he had a case for a free kick that wasn't given when Rashford was brought down by Raphinha. Curious timing after Barcelona's payments to referees in the past...

Blink twice and United are in the lead!

It could go down as an own goal for Kounde but Manchester United are now ahead via another goal from Rashford's creation. Barcelona are reeling as it took only ten minutes for United to bounce back and take the lead after going behind.

Only three minutes for United to find their equalizer following an assist from Fred, the game has opened up in a big way now as neither team wants to lose this.

There's Barcelona's opener!

Marcos Alonso gets the goal versus a United team that he's very familiar with following a cross from Raphinha. It's a goal from former Premier Leaguers versus a current Premier League side. Now can United bounce back in the match?

Back underway

No chances from either side as the second half continues to be as open as the first half ended.

We've reached the half

Both teams have had their chances but Barcelona will have more to do in the second half to cope with Pedri leaving the game. Already missing Sergio Busquets, Xavi is down to bare bones with his midfielders but Manchester United has been creating chances that they can't finish. Weghorst and Sancho have had excellent chances but they'll need to do better or Alejandro Garnacho could be entering soon to give Barcelona something else to think about.

Worry for Barcelona

Pedri has gone down with an injury and will be replaced by Sergi Roberto as he can't continue. Pedri wasn't having his best game but with his skill to get forward and pop up in the box, it's a blow to Xavi's setup.

Oh no, that was United's chance

Wan-Bissaka played an excellent cross into the box after beating his man but Sancho couldn't convert leading another corner for United. It's a chance that United may want back if they don't pull out a victory.

It has been a little better for the Red Devils as of late after Barcelona dominated the opening 15 minutes of the match but the match is one mistake from an opening goal.

Barcelona are creating space when they want

Dominating possession, Barca are cutting through the midfield while United does their best to soak up pressure but it hasn't led to a goal yet. One could be coming before long if United can't control the tempo though.

Almost from Lewandowski!

Pushing De Gea into a great save after rounding Shaw, Barcelona has just uncorked their most dangerous attack of the game so far. United will need to be careful with how adventurous the defenders have been carrying the ball into midfield.

An open start

The teams are testing each other with some interesting tactical tweaks. Left backs are at center back for each team while Weghost is also operating as a winger to provide more of an outlet out wide. It has led to plenty of space to dribble in the middle but the defenses have been stout so far.

Barcelona are on the front foot

But they can't find a path through with Weghorst coming back to provide help defense. While he hasn't hit the back of the net for United, his defensive help has been important.

Luke Shaw is back at center back

Ten Hag made a few changes to Manchester United's lineup to cope with Barcelona with a more defensive back line. The hope is that they'll be able to stop Lewandowski but this could hurt the attack as well.

Starters: de Gea; Malacia; Shaw; Varane; Wan-Bissaka; Fred; Casemiro; Rashford; Fernandes; Sancho; Weghorst

Reserves: Lindelof; Maguire; Dalot; Heaton; Pellestri; Butland; Elanga; Garnacho; Iqbal; Mainoo

As expected for Barcelona

Marcos Alonso will have his hands full facing off with Weghorst but given availability, this is close to the best that Barcelona can put out at the moment.

Starters: ter Stegen; Kounde; Araujo; Alonso; Alba; Pedri; de Jong; Kessie; Raphinha; Lewandowski; Gavi

Reserves: Fati; Torres; Christensen; Roberto; Garcia; Sotorres; Balde; Casado; Torre; Tenas; Alarcon

If there's one person to watch, it's Marcus Rashford

After one of the worst seasons of his career last season with only four goals and two assists, there were calls for Manchester United to possibly move on from Rashford. But instead, ten Hag has provided him with more responsibility after Cristiano Rondalo's dismissal from the club. Rashford has rewarded that and then some with seven game-changing goals in the Premier League this season. Counting go-ahead goals or goals that change a loss into a draw, these are where forwards earn their keep and Rashford has done that and then some for United.

From leveling things in a critical win over Arsenal before scoring a go-ahead goal to standing up their crosstown rivals Manchester City to sinking Leeds United, it's not like Rashford has been doing this in easier matches either as he's up for every game despite the uncertainty in the lineup around him.
