Liverpool advanced into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after defeating RB Leipzig 2-0 on Wednesday. The Reds held a 2-0 advantage heading into the match, and Mohammad Salah and Sadio Mane repeated as the goal scorers during the round of 16 second leg.
Liverpool was active in the final third during the first half, but completely squandered several opportunities to put the game away. Leipzig managed to just about weather Liverpool's initial high defensive line and relentless press, but failed to break it down or establish any meaningful attack despite holding the majority of the possession during the first 45 minutes. Liverpool's lack of finishing and Leipzig's time on the ball led to a goalless first half.
One immediate substitution was made at halftime from Leipzig as the two sides played out the second half, with attacker Alexander Sortloth replacing midfielder Kevin Kampl and additional changes for Leipzig at the hour mark had a fleeting impact on the game. Hwang Hee-Chan and Justin Kluivert came on to chase the match, butut a shot off the post from Alexander Sørloth was Leipzig's last meaningful attempt on goal before Liverpool put the game away with an opening goal for the Reds in the 70th minute on a smooth shot from distance by Salah.
A mere four minutes later, Liverpool extended the lead with a go-ahead goal from Sane.
