Neymar suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during Brazil's 2-0 loss to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday, which he exited before halftime. The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed the news on Wednesday after a round of testing from the team doctors and said the injury will require surgery.

Neymar "underwent clinical and imaging tests this Wednesday, which confirmed the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee.," a statement from the federation read in part. "The attacker will undergo a surgical procedure, on a date yet to be defined, to correct the injuries."

He tripped and fell in first-half stoppage time and was taken off the field in a cart while in tears. He came off the cart and then hobbled to the locker room with assistance, likely to receive medical treatment. He eventually left Montevideo's Estadio Centenario on crutches.

Richarlison came on in his place.

At the time of the injury, Brazilian broadcaster Globo reported that the player suffered a severe knee twist, which could signal ligament damage. Per team doctor Rodrigo Lasma, the severity of Neymar's injury was not immediately clear and required a second round of testing.

"We did all the tests and we will repeat them tomorrow," he said, according to the AP." Those 24 hours are key to see how his knee will respond, how swollen it will be and what images will show. Let's wait for the exams with calmness, evaluate with calmness and tell you once we have a diagnosis."

The forward now faces yet another lenghty spell on the sidelines. He has spent much of the last year dealing with different medical issues, including an ankle problem that required surgery last winter. His debut for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal was also delayed while he dealt with an injury which made him a doubt for last month's Brazil games, but he was able to play for his national team.

Brazil were down 1-0 to Uruguay when Neymar came off. They eventually lost 2-0, which snapped the team's unbeaten run to World Cup qualifying. The five-time world champions won their first two matches of the campaign last month but were held to a draw on Thursday by Venezuela.
