Charlie Weis says his coaching career is probably over. But the career of his son appears to be just getting underway.

Al.com and the Tuscaloosa News reported Tuesday that Charlie Weis Jr. has joined Alabama's football program as a support staff member. Weis Jr. served in a similar position under his father at Kansas before the elder Weis's unceremonious midseason firing last fall.

The move is not official, but Weis Jr.'s Twitter account -- not otherwise active since February -- has changed its bio to "#RollTide" and its location to Tuscaloosa. (Expect the "@weisjr_ku" handle to probably change at some point in the near future as well.)

Alabama has also hired former Kansas offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau, per the News.

Per al.com, Weis Jr. has also had minor roles with the New England Patriots and Florida Gators, teams with which his father also spent time.

And while it's impossible to treat Weis's head coaching career as anything but a punchline (sorry, Charlie), there's something to remember before you crack wise on the Tide bringing Weis the Younger aboard: there are thousands upon thousands of coaches who would have given up limbs to have half of Weis's career, even without the money. (The staggering, staggering amounts of money.) And that career -- NFL play-caller, Sugar Bowl coach, etc. -- didn't happen entirely by accident.

If the apple didn't fall that far from the tree, yes, Weis Jr. may very well have some coaching chops ... and Alabama seems as good a place to begin developing them as any.
