Rangers manager Chris Woodward said he will likely carry three catchers to start the season, which means Mathis and Jose Trevino could be on the 30-man active roster for Opening Day, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Mathis and Trevino are competing to be the top backup to Robinson Chirinos, and the loser of that battle may not remain on the active roster when the roster limits are eventually lowered to 26. Trevino is considered to have the better bat, but Mathis has the experience edge.
