Springs (5-3) earned the victory Tuesday against the Yankees, striking out four in five innings while allowing a run on two hits and a walk. Other than Andrew Benintendi, Springs shut down the Yankees. Benintendi accounted for both hits against Springs, a single in the second and a triple in the fifth. The lefty recorded 10 groundouts and fanned Aaron Judge both times he faced him. Perhaps to limit his innings and preserve him for later in the season, Springs was removed after tossing 78 pitches. His 89.1 innings this year are double his next highest total in a season at the big-league level.... See More ... See Less

Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Sleeper pitchers for Week 20 (Aug. 15-21)
Springs continues to deliver good ratios even if he's rarely going six innings at a time. Having two starts this week should help make up for the lack of volume, though only one of the matchups (Yankees and Royals) is working in his favor.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Fans eight in no-decision
Springs didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Brewers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. The lefty got tagged for two runs in the first frame but settled down after that, giving the Rays a chance to tie things up before he hit the showers. Springs generated 16 swinging strikes among his 85 pitches and fell one strikeout short of his season high, and he'll take an impressive 2.56 ERA and 91:18 K:BB through 84.1 innings on the year into his next outing.... Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Cruises to win in Detroit
Springs (4-3) allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out six over six innings to earn the win Thursday over the Tigers. Springs had to work around a pair of errors from Yandy Diaz in the third inning, which ultimately allowed two runs to score. Other than that, Springs was sharp in his longest start since June 24. The southpaw threw 60 of 85 pitches for strikes. For the season, he has a 2.50 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 83:16 K:BB across 22 outings (14 starts), though he's allowed 10 runs (seven earned) through 19.1 innings in his last four appearances. Springs is tentatively lined up for a tough road start in Milwaukee next week.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Sleeper pitchers for Week 18 (Aug. 1-7)
Springs went only 4 1/3 innings in his first start back from a leg injury and five in his second last time out. He was struggling to go deep into games even before then, which limits his utility in spite of his stellar ratios, but he's facing a Tigers offense this week that ranks dead last in runs scored.... Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Loses to Cleveland
Springs (3-3) was charged with the loss Friday against the Guardians after allowing three runs six hits with five strikeouts and one walk over five innings. The left-hander kept Cleveland scoreless through three innings, but he gave up a run in the fourth and a two-run homer to Jose Ramirez in the fifth. Springs is without a victory in his past five starts, and he has a 5.32 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 27:4 K:BB across 23.2 frames during that stretch. He tentatively lines up to make his next start in Detroit next week.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Returns with no-decision
Springs allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits over 4.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Royals. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. Springs returned from the injured list Sunday and showed signs of rust early. He coughed up an RBI single to Bobby Witt in the first inning followed by an RBI sacrifice fly to Nick Pratto in the second. Springs lowered his season ERA to 2.50 with a 72:15 K:BB through 68.1 frames. However, over his last four starts, he's posted a 5.30 ERA across 18.2 innings. Springs is lined up to face Cleveland at home next week.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Sleeper pitchers for Week 17 (July 25-31)
Springs will be making only his second start back from a leg injury, which brings with it workload concerns, but he still offers big bat-missing appeal and will be facing a middling offense that's vulnerable to left-handers in particular.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Reinstated from IL, starting Sunday
Springs (lower leg) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and is starting Sunday versus the Royals, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. As expected, Springs is back from the IL and is starting for the first time since July 5 after dealing with tightness in his lower right leg. The left-hander has been impressive this season, posting a 2.53 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 70 punchouts over 64 innings in 19 appearances, including 11 starts.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Likely to return Sunday
Springs (lower leg) is expected to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game in Kansas City, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Springs was moved to the IL on July 10 due to right lower leg tightness, but he'll end up spending close to the minimum amount of time on the shelf so long as he completes a bullpen session Thursday or Friday without any renewed discomfort. Before being shelved with the injury, Springs had made a productive early-season transition from the bullpen into the rotation. Over his first 11 starts, Springs has produced a 3.02 ERA while striking out 59 in 53.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Heading to injured list
Springs was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 7, with tightness in his lower right leg, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Springs presumably picked up the injury during his start last Tuesday against Boston, and he'll move to the injured list rather than make his next turn through the rotation Monday. The left-hander will be eligible to return immediately after the All-Star break July 22, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that time. Josh Fleming was promoted in a corresponding move and is likely to fill Springs' spot in the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Gives up three runs in no-decision
Springs gave up three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings in an 8-4 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision. Springs got into trouble early, giving up home runs off the bats of Xander Bogaerts and Trevor Story in the first and second innings. He eventually settled down to throw a couple of scoreless frames before being pulled after four innings of work. The 29-year-old left-hander has asserted himself as a fairly dependable starter in 2022 after beginning the season in the bullpen. Despite giving up three earned runs over four innings he still has a 2.53 ERA and 1.05 WHIP this season. Springs, who has now given up five home runs over his last two starts, is expected to make his next start Monday at home in a rematch against the Red Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Added back to roster
Springs (personal) was activated from the family medical emergency list Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Springs was away for a few days while tending to a personal matter, but he is back with the team and will jump right back into the rotation Tuesday night against the Red Sox. Springs has faced Boston only once this season, and he tossed two scoreless innings of relief against them back in late April.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Sleeper pitchers for Week 14 (July 4-10)
After missing his last turn due to a family medical emergency, Springs returns Tuesday. It's a tough Red Sox lineup he'll be facing, but his changeup still features plenty of swing-and-miss. Suffice it to say this week's crop of sleeper pitchers is on the weaker side.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Returning to start Tuesday
Springs (personal) will rejoin the Rays and start Tuesday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Springs ended up staying home during the team's trip to Toronto to deal with a family medical matter. While Springs allowed three home runs his last time out, he's been fantastic overall this season in his hybrid starter/reliever role, posting a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 60 innings. There's little reason to think his workload will be significantly limited in his return.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: On family medical emergency list
Springs was placed on the family medical emergency list Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Springs was a potential starter for Thursday's matchup against the Blue Jays, but he'll spend some time away from the team after landing on the bereavement list. He'll be forced to miss 3-to-7 days but should be an option to start sometime next week. Matt Wisler is serving as the opener Thursday, while Ryan Yarbrough will likely serve as a bulk reliever after he was called up.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Fans nine in quality start
Springs didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Pirates, allowing three runs on three solo home runs among seven hits over six innings. He struck out a season-high nine without walking a batter. The Rays handed Springs a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the southpaw's inability to keep the ball in the park ended up costing him a win despite his otherwise impressive performance. He's served up multiple homers in three of his last six starts, but he's otherwise been sharp with a 3.03 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 38:6 K:BB through 32.2 innings over that stretch.... See More ... Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Sleeper pitchers for Week 12 (June 20-26)
Springs finally ran into some trouble against the Orioles, of all teams, but he still has a 2.00 ERA and a devastating changeup. It's hard to imagine lightning striking twice against the Pirates this week.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Tagged for four runs
Springs gave up four earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six over 4.1 innings in a 7-6 win over the Orioles on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. Springs labored through 4.1 innings in Baltimore, snapping a string of six effective outings dating back to mid-May. Everything unraveled for Springs in the bottom of the fifth when four singles and a walk plated three runs and knocked him out of the game with his team up 6-5. If Springs had managed to get out of the inning, he would have been in line for his fourth win of the year. The southpaw has been solid since being transitioned to a starter's role earlier in the season and will look to rebound next week at home against the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Earns win Sunday
Springs (3-2) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday versus the Twins. Springs was stingy on the mound and received plenty of support from the Rays' offense. This was his second win in eight starts, and it's the fifth time he's managed to keep runs off the board since moving into the rotation. Overall, he's pitched to a strong 1.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 50:12 K:BB in 49.2 innings across 16 outings. He'll look to keep up his success in Baltimore next weekend.... See More ... See Less
