  The Royals optioned Lynch to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. The move comes one day after Lynch allowed six runs over 6.2 innings in bulk relief in a loss to the Yankees. Kansas City's decision to send Lynch back to the minors could indicate that the club expects Michael Wacha (foot) to be ready to return from the 15-day injured list next week, but no announcement on a replacement for Lynch in the rotation has been made just yet.

• Royals' Daniel Lynch: Surrenders six runs in bulk relief

  Lynch did not factor in the decision against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 6.2 innings. Dan Altavilla was tabbed to serve as Kansas City's opener Wednesday, but he got only one out while allowing five batters to reach base. Lynch therefore entered in the first frame and immediately yielded a sacrifice fly before Jose Trevino slugged a three-run homer against him. The left-hander went on to allow two more long balls -- one each to Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres -- and six total runs were charged to his ledger. Lynch at least managed to eat up innings, as the 6.2 frames were his most so far this season, but he's now allowed 14 runs over his past 10.2 innings and has an ugly 6.35 ERA on the campaign. It's unclear if he'll go back to working as a traditional starter or continue to pitch behind an opener moving forward, but either way there's a good chance he'll fall out of the rotation when Michael Wacha (foot) is ready to return.

Lynch was lit up for eight earned runs in just four innings during his most recent start Friday against Seattle, so the Royals will use him behind an opener, reducing the amount of matchups he has against formidable sluggers Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.   Lynch is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Mariners at Kauffman Stadium. After being called up from Triple-A Omaha this past weekend, Lynch was lined up to make his third start of the season with the Royals during the team's series versus the Guardians earlier this week, but he was pushed back in the pitching schedule after Wednesday's game was postponed. He'll end up taking the hill for the opening game of a series with the Mariners and will go head-to-head with Seattle right-hander Bryce Miller. Over his three outings (two starts) with the big club this season, Lynch has delivered a 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB in 12 innings.

  The Royals recalled Lynch from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Lynch was optioned to Triple-A on Friday, but he'll be back with the big club just two days later after Michael Wacha was placed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left foot. With Wacha's injury likely to keep him sidelined for several weeks, Lynch will take the right-hander's spot in the rotation, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com. Lynch previously made two spot starts and a two-inning relief appearance for the Royals last month, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over 12 frames. The southpaw was similarly sharp over his four outings with Omaha in May (2.91 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 15:4 K:BB in 21.2 innings), and he'll look to carry over that strong form for what could be an extended run in the big-league rotation. He tentatively lines up to make his first start in place of Wacha on Thursday in Cleveland, though with an off day on tap Monday, the Royals could choose to push Lynch to the back of the pitching schedule and have him take the hill next weekend versus the Mariners in Kansas City.
