New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson may soon move from the court to the big screen. Director and producer Spike Lee and NBA champion Ray Allen were interviewed on the Jumpman show "Encore" and discussed early talks of a potential movie deal with the rookie. They said there have been conversations about Williamson starring in a "He Got Game" sequel.
The original 1998 movie was directed by Lee and starred Ray Allen as star basketball prospect Jesus Shuttleworth.
The 19-year-old is reportedly on the shortlist of players to star in the second part of the movie.
"We were trying to get a meeting with him before [the coronavirus pandemic]. Ray Allen and I were trying to get a meeting with him in New Orleans. I'm still for it," Lee said to Stage Steel during the episode.
In the past, Williamson has expressed interest in taking being part of the sequel. In 2019 he said, "I would wanna be in the sequel to 'He Got Game,' I would definitely want to be like, in the Part 2 of that movie."
Talks of a sequel have been floating around since 2015.
In 2018, Allen sat down with ESPN to discuss his vision for a Part 2.
"There's so much more to that movie that we got to continue with the storyline. We'd love to do a part two, for sure, going forward. Because there's so much content, so much happening in the world today, so much happening in sports that we need to talk about," Allen said.
It's not just the star of the original hoping for a sequel, he has discussed it with Lee as well. "Spike and I have talked on several occasions. We just recently had the 20-year reunion … We've talked about it, we have a couple people that want to be involved," he said.
Lee said previously a major component is bringing Denzel Washington back into the mix, but noted on "Encore" that the actor would not be involved in a sequel. Washington played Jake Shuttleworth, Allen's father in the movie and a character spent six years in prison after accidentally killing his wife during a violent domestic dispute.
Lee did say that Rosario Dawson, who played Lala Bonilla in the original, might be involved.
