  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Moved to 60-day injured list

The Brewers moved Ashby (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby is expected to miss the majority of the season after undergoing surgery on his shoulder. The move to the 60-day IL clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Bennett Sousa after Sousa was traded to Milwaukee from the Reds on Sunday.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Undergoes surgery

Ashby underwent surgery Friday on the labrum in his left shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. An official for the Brewers tells McCalvy that the surgery went as well as could be hoped. The southpaw is expected to miss significant time with the shoulder injury, and the Brewers are expected to share more information about the plan for his recovery in the coming days.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Headed for shoulder surgery

Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Wednesday that Ashby needs arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The procedure is scheduled for Friday and could knock Ashby out for the entire season. He was placed on the 15-day injured list just before Opening Day after being diagnosed with an impingement and slight labral tear back in late February. The initial hope was that the 24-year-old southpaw might be able to join the Brewers by mid-May, but treatment and rest failed to solve the issue. Milwaukee will likely soon move him to the 60-day IL.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Placed on injured list

Ashby (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby is likely to miss the first six weeks of the regular season while recovering from the left shoulder injury, and he has yet to return to throwing bullpens after being diagnosed with a partial tear and impingement of his labrum. The southpaw could make starts for the Brewers upon his return, but Milwaukee might ease the 24-year-old back into action.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Throws on flat ground

Ashby (shoulder) played catch on flat ground Wednesday in Brewers camp, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby said he was tossing at a distance of about 75 feet and that the workout lasted around 10 minutes. He plans to do something similar within the next couple of days, assuming his left shoulder continues to respond well. The 24-year-old southpaw will open the 2023 season on the injured list after being diagnosed last month with a slight labral tear and impingement, but he could be an option for Milwaukee by mid-May if there are no hiccups in his throwing progression.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Ready for flat-ground work

Ashby (shoulder) is scheduled to do some flat-ground throwing Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby is nearing the end of a six-week shutdown period while he works his way back from an impingement and slight labral tear in his left shoulder. The hope is that the southpaw will be ready to rejoin the Brewers around mid-May, although he'll have a lot of boxes to check to make that happen.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Hopes to return by mid-May

Ashby (shoulder) said Tuesday he's hoping to return by mid-May, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby revealed the left shoulder injury he's dealing with is an impingement and a slight labral tear, specifically, and also that he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in late January. He's about halfway into a six-week shutdown period before he can ramp things back up again.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Multi-month absence on tap

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that Ashby (shoulder) will be out for "a couple of months," Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. McCalvy brought some left shoulder fatigue into Brewers camp, and it has since been diagnosed as inflammation. The 24-year-old left-hander will likely be fully held out of Cactus League action before landing on the injured list just ahead of Opening Day. Expect more clarity later this spring on a mapped-out timeline for his 2023 season debut.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Dealing with shoulder fatigue

General manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Ashby will be behind the Brewers' other starting pitchers in camp while he contends with left shoulder fatigue, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The Brewers are going to take things easy with Ashby to start spring training, an approach that makes sense given that the southpaw battled shoulder inflammation in 2022. The 24-year-old struck out 126 batters in his 107.1 innings over 27 appearances last season, but he also walked 47 and allowed 15 homers. There's certainly upside in Ashby's arm because of his ability to miss bats, but his command along with health concerns makes him a risky proposition for the upcoming campaign.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Strikes out six batters

Ashby did not factor into the decision against the Marlins on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking none over 4.1 innings. Ashby tossed 37 of 65 pitches for strikes across 4.1 frames. While he allowed just three hits, one was a two-run shot from Peyton Burdick. Ashby's innings have been limited since August, with the young lefty lasting five innings or more just twice in six appearances since then. He has just three quality starts on the year and has recently been used in a hybrid starter/reliever role. After Saturday's outing, Ashby's ERA sits at 4.49.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Starting Saturday

Ashby will start Saturday's game against the Marlins. Ashby worked out of the bullpen during Sunday's loss to the Reds and allowed a run on two hits and two walks while failing to record a strikeout in 1.2 innings. He hasn't tossed more than 41 pitches in either of his two appearances since returning from the injured list, so it's possible that he won't be able to handle a full workload as Saturday's starter.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Pitches two scoreless

Ashby pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two in Tuesday's loss to the Mets. He did not factor into the decision. Ashby was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's start following a shoulder injury and he was able to hold the Mets scoreless over two frames. The left-hander wasn't expected to handle a full workload and was removed from the contest after tossing 41 pitches. Prior to heading to the IL, Ashby had struggled to a 6.89 ERA over 15.2 innings in his previous three starts. Overall, the 24-year-old owns a 4.48 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 118 punchouts over 98.1 frames in 24 appearances this season including 18 starts.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Activated for Tuesday's start

Ashby (shoulder) was activated from the injured list Tuesday. It was announced Monday that Ashby would return to action Tuesday, and the Brewers made the move official one day later. While Ashby will start Tuesday's contest, he is not ready to handle a full workload, making it unlikely he will be out there long enough to qualify for a win.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Slated to return Tuesday

Ashby (shoulder) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday to start a bullpen game against the Mets, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby landed on the injured list in late August due to shoulder inflammation but resumed mound work last week. He's expected to take on a relief role over the final few weeks of the regular season so he doesn't have to fully build up to a starting role, but he'll begin Tuesday's matchup on the mound since the Brewers plan to lean on their bullpen.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Throws 18 pitches off mound

Ashby (shoulder) threw 18 pitches during a bullpen session Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby has been on the injured list since late August due to shoulder inflammation, and Wednesday's throwing session marked the first time that he threw off a mound since sustaining his injury. The southpaw will take two days off before throwing another bullpen Saturday in an attempt to get him ready for a bullpen role once he's deemed ready to return.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Will return as reliever

Ashby (shoulder) will throw off a mound Sunday or Monday but is not being stretched out to start, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby hit the injured list with shoulder inflammation in late August. While he's making progress towards a return to action, he wouldn't have time to make many appearances if he had to go through a full build-up process as a starter. Instead, the Brewers are valuing getting him back as soon as possible, albeit in a relief role. The decision makes sense giving the timing of the injury but robs Ashby of most of his fantasy value.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Expected to throw soon

Ashby (shoulder) is expected to begin playing catch in the coming days, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby has been shut down since landing on the injured list, retroactive to Aug. 20. While he'll have more work to do prior to his return, it's a positive step that he'll be able to engage in his first activity since being sidelined.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Placed on injured list

Ashby was placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation Monday, retroactive to Aug. 20. Ashby struggled during Friday's start against the Cubs, giving up six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out eight in five innings. It's possible that his injury contributed to his struggles, and he'll ultimately be forced to miss time. The Brewers haven't yet indicated who will take Ashby's place in the rotation, but Adrian Houser (elbow) could come off the injured list this week.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Strikes out five batters

Ashby did not factor into the decision against the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two over six innings. Ashby pitched well Sunday, throwing 51 of 79 pitches for strikes across six frames. He limited the damage to two earned runs, both solo shots. Ashby lasted six innings for the fourth time in 16 starts this season, pitching much more efficiently than in previous contests. This was his third quality start of the year, and helped improve his ERA to 4.24.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Loses fourth straight start

Ashby (2-10) allowed four runs on three hits, five walks and a hit batter while striking out five over 4.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Reds. Ashby gave up two runs in the second inning and a two-run home run to Jose Barrero in the fourth. The five walks Ashby allowed matched a season high, and this was the first time in six starts he's allowed more than two earned runs. The southpaw now has a 4.32 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 103:41 K:BB through 85.1 innings across 21 appearances (15 starts). He's projected for a road start in St. Louis next weekend, with two off days for the Brewers next week likely affording Ashby extra rest.
