Player Outlook
The carpet was laid out for Garrett Mitchell last spring. He had secured a regular role in the Milwaukee outfield and was coming off a strong first cup of major-league coffee in 2022. Unfortunately, though, he suffered significant damage to the labrum in his left shoulder in the 18th game of the 2023 regular season and required a surgical procedure that kept him out until late September. Mitchell was then left off the Brewers' roster for their Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks, and his standing within the organization was even further clouded by the record eight-year, $82 million contract doled out to top outfield prospect Jackson Chourio in early December. Mitchell has great speed and a mature plate approach, but he'll need steady playing time to make it count. Chourio now projects to be the Opening Day center fielder, with Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick flanking him in the corners. Fourth outfielders don't usually carry fantasy relevance.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Registers steal in win

Mitchell went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Cubs. Mitchell is 5-for-14 over four games since the All-Star break, though he's also struck out five times in that span. The outfielder's steal Tuesday was his second of the campaign. He's batting .250 with a .762 OPS, one home run, three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored over 14 contests this year after missing most of the first half with a fractured finger.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Busy in Sunday's win

Mitchell went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Nationals. Mitchell entered Sunday without a homer or a steal before getting one of each in this contest. The outfielder is hitting just .192 with three RBI and two runs scored over his first 10 games of the season after missing the first three months of the year with a fractured finger. He has been limited to a strong-side platoon role so far, sharing center field with switch hitter Blake Perkins.

Mitchell is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers. With southpaw James Paxton on the mound for Los Angeles, the lefty-hitting Mitchell will take a seat on the bench. Since being activated from the injured list July 1, Mitchell is 2-for-13 (.154) with four walks and four strikeouts.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Not in lineup versus southpaw

Mitchell is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest in Colorado. Mitchell was activated from the 60-day injured list earlier Monday but will begin his first game back on the bench. It's not a surprise, as the Rockies are starting lefty Austin Gomber, and most of the playing time for the left-handed hitting Mitchell figures to come versus righties.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Activated from 60-day IL

The Brewers activated Mitchell (finger) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Mitchell will be making his season debut once he gets into a game after missing the first three months of the season with a fractured finger. He slashed .318/.404/.636 with four home runs and four stolen bases over 12 rehab games with Triple-A Nashville. The 25-year-old will join a crowded Milwaukee outfield that already features Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Set to be activated Monday

Mitchell (finger) will join the Brewers in Denver on Monday and will be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of the series opener against the Rockies, Adam McCalvy of MLB.comreports. The 25-year-old has missed the first three months of the season due to a fractured finger, but he's ready to join the Brewers after a 14-game rehab assignment in the minor leagues. Milwaukee will now have a major logjam in the outfield, with Mitchell joining a group of Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio. Frelick saw time at third base during spring training, but Joey Ortiz (neck) has played his way into the starting job during the first half.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Rehab assignment ending soon

Manager Pat Murphy said Friday the rehab assignment for Mitchell (finger) will end Saturday and the team hasn't had discussions about optioning him, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Brewers are currently dealing with a logjam in the outfield, with Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio all seeing significant action during Mitchell's absence due to a fractured finger. Considering the injury and Milwaukee's outfield depth, it's possible that Mitchell will remain with Triple-A Nashville after being reinstated. However, Murphy's comments don't seem to support that possibility. Mitchell was removed from Wednesday's rehab outing with an unrelated hamstring injury but was able to suit up and play Thursday. Regardless of what level he ends up playing, Mitchell should be activated from the 60-day IL this weekend.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Exits rehab game with injury

Mitchell (finger) was removed from Wednesday's rehab game with Triple-A Nashville with an apparent left hamstring injury, Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic reports. Mitchell appeared to grab at the hamstring following a swing in the ninth inning of the contest. He is on a rehab assignment while coming back from a fractured finger and had seemed close to returning, but the hamstring injury could now delay things.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Rehabbing at Triple-A

Mitchell (finger) has gone 5-for-22 with two home runs and two stolen bases over five games since moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville on June 13. Mitchell began his rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on June 10, playing in two games before moving up to Nashville. Since joining the Brewers' top affiliate, Mitchell has made starts both center field and right field in addition to designated hitter. Mitchell will remain at Nashville for the time being, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, but a return from the 60-day injured list shouldn't be far off. Out all season with a fractured finger, Mitchell is a viable stash in fantasy leagues where he's still available.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Swinging bat

MItchell (finger) was seen hitting off a tee Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Mitchell is on track for a June return, and he took another step in his recovery Friday. He took three sets of 10 swings off a tee as the team warmed up for its matchup with the Red Sox. Once he's activated, Mitchell is expected to push Jackson Chourio, Blake Perkins and Sal Frelick for playing time in the Brewers outfield.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Targeting mid-June return

Mitchell (finger) is aiming to return from the 60-day injured list ahead of the Brewers' series against the Angels on June 17, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell is slated to begin hitting off a tee this weekend while the Brewers are in Boston. After that, he will head to the team's complex in Arizona to continue rehabbing and take at-bats in ACL games before officially beginning a rehab assignment with one of Milwaukee's minor-league affiliates. The 25-year-old outfielder has been on the IL all season due to a fractured finger on his left hand and will have to compete for playing time in a crowded Brewers outfield once he returns.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Brewers transferred Mitchell (finger) to the 60-day injured list Sunday. GM Matt Arnold recently said Mitchell is expected to return around the start of June, so the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his return timeline from a fractured finger. Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins should continue to split playing time in center field for Milwaukee in the meantime.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Targeting June 1 return

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Mitchell (finger) should return around June 1, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Previous estimates had Mitchell missing 4-to-6 weeks after he fractured his left index finger back in late March, but evidently it's going to take a bit longer than that. Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins have been handling center field in Mitchell's absence and will continue to do so for quite a bit longer.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Fracture healing as expected

Mitchell underwent an X-ray on Wednesday which showed that his fractured left index finger hasn't shifted and is healing as expected, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Mitchell's timeline would have been extended had the finger been displaced, but thankfully for him and the Brewers, that's hasn't been the case. He remains on a recovery timetable of around 4-to-6 weeks, meaning he could return around the end of April or early May if all continues to go well.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Moves to IL

The Brewers placed Mitchell (finger) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Mitchell will likely face a 6-to-8-week absence to begin the season due to the fractured left index finger he suffered in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks. While Mitchell is on the shelf, the Brewers will likely turn to Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins to form a platoon in center field.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said in an interview Wednesday with 97.3 The Game Milwaukee that Mitchell is expected to be sidelined 6-to-8 weeks with a fractured finger on his left hand. Murphy revealed Monday that Mitchell suffered a fracture, and the skipper has now offered specifics on a timetable which will have the outfielder out well into May. Mitchell had been set to start in right field against right-handers, but now those duties will fall to Jackson Chourio, with Sal Frelick covering center field. On a positive note, Murphy said that Mitchell won't need surgery at this time.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Says hand feels fine

Mitchell said Monday that his injured hand feels fine, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell's hand swelled up on him when he was jammed on a swing Sunday, prompting the Brewers to send him for X-rays Monday. Although he had yet to undergo imaging when he spoke to reporters, he played catch with no issues Monday and it seems there is a low level of concern regarding the injury.
