Less than 24 hours remain until the NHL trade deadline, and a flurry of activity has already taken place around the league.
After the Vancouver Canucks landed center Elias Lindholm and the Winnipeg Jets acquired center Sean Monahan, the trade front was extremely silent. However, several teams began to make trades Wednesday to really ramp up the market.
The biggest deal saw the Pittsburgh Penguins trade star winger Jake Guentzel and defenseman Ty Smith to the Carolina Hurricanes in a blockbuster deal. In the trade, the Penguins acquired forwards Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Vasily Ponomarev, Cruz Lucius, a conditional 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.
The Hurricanes will send a 2024 first-round pick to the Penguins if Carolina makes it to the Stanley Cup Final. It will become a 2024 second-round pick if the Hurricanes don't reach the Stanley Cup Final. The Penguins will receive an additional 2024 fifth-round pick if Carolina wins the Stanley Cup.
The Penguins will retain 25% of Guentzel's salary.
On Wednesday, the Vegas Golden Knights acquired defenseman Noah Hanifin in a three-team trade with the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers. In exchange for Hanifin, the Flames received defenseman Daniil Miromanov, a 2025 or 2026 first-round pick, and a conditional third-round pick.
The first-round pick will be in 2025 unless the Golden Knights trade it this year. The Flyers netted a 2024 fifth-round pick as a broker in the deal.
The Florida Panthers are looking to build off of their Stanley Cup Final appearance last season, and as such they landed winger Vladimir Tarasenko in a trade with the Ottawa Senators. The Senators will receive a 2025 third-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick, as well as retaining 50% of Tarasenko's $5 million salary. Our Austin Nivison deems the deal a steal for Florida.
