  • Saints' Tony Jones: Leads backfield amid injuries

Jones rushed 16 times for 27 yards during Thursday's 31-6 loss to the Bills.

With Alvin Kamara (knee) and Mark Ingram (knee) sidelined, Jones clearly served as the top option on early downs. However, the return of lineman Terron Armstead wasn't enough to help him overcome the struggles of this Trevor Siemian-led offense, and Ty Montgomery stole a bunch of work on passing downs en route to seven targets. Even if Kamara and Ingram remain sidelined in Week 13 against Dallas, Jones seems hard to trust as a touchdown-dependent fantasy asset.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: Primed for bigger workload Thursday

Jones is poised to be the Saints' lead running back Thursday against the Bills with both Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram sidelined due to knee injuries, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.

While Kamara is missing a third consecutive contest, Ingram is logging his first absence since returning to New Orleans via trade from Houston back on Oct. 27. Jones thus is in line for more work, but his small sample isn't particularly encouraging. In five appearances this season, he's averaged 3.6 yards on 22 carries and hauled in four of six targets for 10 yards. Aside from Jones, the Saints likely will give wide receiver Ty Montgomery and special teamer Dwayne Washington some run out of the backfield as well.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: More work possible Thursday

Jones could be in line for a bigger workload Thursday against the Bills with Alvin Kamara (knee) ruled out and Mark Ingram (knee) questionable for the contest, Larry Holder of The Athletic reports.

Kamara's sprained MCL is forcing him out for a third straight game, while Ingram was listed as limited twice and with no activity once on Saints practice reports during Week 12 prep. If Ingram ends up joining Kamara as inactive Thursday, Jones, special-teamer Dwayne Washington, fullback Alex Armah and wide receiver Ty Montgomery would be the candidates for backfield reps. To date, Jones has gotten the most work among the quartet out of the backfield this season, averaging 3.6 yards on his 22 carries and gathering in four of six targets for 10 yards.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: Minimal role in return to lineup

Jones rushed three times for two yards during Sunday's 40-29 loss to the Eagles.

In his first game back from an ankle injury, Jones barely saw any work despite the absence of Alvin Kamara (knee). Instead, Mark Ingram (24 combined carries and targets) almost exclusively carried the load. Even if Kamara remains sidelined in Week 12 against Buffalo, Jones does not seem like an advisable fantasy option in any format.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: Opening looms in return from IR

Jones (ankle) was activated off injured reserve Saturday, per the NFL media's transactions page.

Jones is back on the roster just in time for an intriguing opportunity Sunday in Philadelphia, as workhorse Alvin Kamara (knee) has been ruled out. While Mark Ingram is expected to get the starting nod in Kamara's absence, Jones is slated to work as his top backup ahead of special teams contributor Dwayne Washington. Jones averaged a respectable 4.1 yards per carry on 19 attempts in four games prior to injuring his ankle.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: On track to be activated

Jones (ankle) appears on track to be activated from injured reserve before Sunday's game in Philadelphia, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Jones returned to practice Wednesday after a month-and-a-half absence, and he may now step right back in as the No. 2 running back, this time behind Mark Ingram instead of Alvin Kamara (knee). With both Kamara and slot receiver/scatback Ty Montgomery (finger) ruled out, the Saints are left with Ingram and special teamer Dwayne Washington as the backfield options apart from Jones. Last week, Ingram took on 18 touches and played 85 percent of the snaps in a loss to Tennessee, though Montgomery earned a handful of plays in the backfield before exiting late in the first quarter with a finger injury.

  • Saints' Tony Jones: Returns to practice

The Saints designated Jones (ankle) for return from injured reserve Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Along with Jones, the Saints had top back Alvin Kamara back in practice Wednesday after Kamara missed a Week 10 loss to Tennessee with a minor knee sprain. Mark Ingram filled in and took on a a three-down role this past Sunday, but there's still some chance for Jones to be the No. 2 back once he's healthy. Jones last played in Week 4, taking 23 touches for 87 yards over the first four games of the season.
