The longest active winning streak in high school football does not belong to a football factory in Texas, California or some other hotbed area college football teams heavily recruit. It belongs to a small Virginia high school: Riverheads High School in Augusta County, Va.
The team won the state championship with a victory on Saturday -- their nation-leading 50th consecutive win.
The 45-14 win over Galax is Riverheads' sixth consecutive Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship win, according to the Staunton News Leader. No other team in the country has an active win streak of 50 games. The team's last loss came on Oct. 13, 2018 and they have not lost a playoff game since 2015.
The previous owners of the longest winning streak in high school football was Kirtland High School in Ohio. They won 55 consecutive games, but that streak ended earlier in December. Riverheads needs two wins to tie the Virginia state record of most consecutive wins, currently held by Phoebus High School in Hampton at 52.
Riverheads Head coach Robert Casto has been at the helm since 1996 and has a record of 261-59. He retired after the 2018 season, but when his replacement quit four months into the job, Casto rejoined the Gladiators, according to the Staunton News Leader.
While Riverheads' streak is very impressive, the team is still nowhere near catching De La Salle (Calif.)'s all-time longest mark of 151 straight wins.
