The first five picks in most every re-draft league this year are outfielders, and since they're all on the right side of 30, you can imagine they'd rank just as high in Dynasty leagues.
But another rises to their stature in those future-minded formats. In fact, 21-year-old Juan Soto ranks second here, behind only 22-year-old Ronald Acuna. Given what Soto has already accomplished at such a young age -- and with such advanced bat skills -- it's easy to pencil him in for elite numbers over the next decade. A little too easy, maybe, but it doesn't seem like the sort of pick you'll ever have reason to second-guess.
The outfield of course offers no shortage of proven contributors and high-upside plays. Unproven prospects like Dylan Carlson, Jarred Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez rank fairly high here, as do still-developing types like Eloy Jimenez and Victor Robles. And don't expect Alex Verdugo or Austin Riley to slip through the cracks.
Note that several players who are currently DH-only in CBS Sports leagues appear here. If Yordan Alvarez, Nelson Cruz, Miguel Andujar and Khris Davis were to gain eligibility at a position, outfield would be the most likely.
We discussed prospect comps and my outfield Dynasty rankings Thursday on the Fantasy Baseball Today Podcast. Keep up with everything baseball and subscribe here.
Here are the three factors I weigh most heavily when putting together these rankings:
- Present value: What a player is expected to be in 2020
- Future value: What his peak looks like and how much peak he has left
- Confidence rating: How confident I am in him meeting his immediate and long-term value
Each factor is measured on a 1-to-5 score, with five being the best, and a player's ranking is primarily determined by adding the scores. Ties typically go to the younger player, but personal preference plays a role as well. The distinctions become less evident further down the list, so at some point subjectivity has to reign.
