A boisterous crowd and an elite PGA Tour field will be on hand starting Thursday at TPC Scottsdale for the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. One of the PGA Tour's most popular venues lost some of its edge last year amid the pandemic, but a crowd that is 200,000 strong at times will be back and is likely to be more vocal than ever. The fans will cheer on a field that includes six of the world's top 10 players and big names like Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth. Caesars Sportsbook lists world No. 1 and Scottsdale resident Jon Rahm as the 15-2 favorite in its latest 2022 WM Phoenix Open golf odds. Justin Thomas (12-1) and Patrick Cantlay (14-1) are among the other top contenders in the 2022 WM Phoenix Open field, which also includes two-time event winners Hideki Matsuyama (18-1) and Koepka (30-1).

Can Matsuyama find the magic in Scottsdale again after winning in 2016 and 2017 among his four top-five finishes? Or will it be Koepka who rises to the occasion and puts you in position to cash in with your 2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf picks? Before you make your Fantasy golf rankings or lock in any bets on the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, you need to check out the Fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

In last week's picks for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, eight of Gates' selections finished in the top 16, with his top three all posting top-10 finishes. That included Spieth, who rallied from 11 strokes down after 36 holes and fell just short of the victory,

The expert has been on a roll all season. At The American Express, four of his top five selections finished in the top 15, and he nailed his picks at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes.

And at the Hero World Challenge, again four of his top seven finished in the top five. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has ranked his top 20 golfers for the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Waste Management Phoenix Open picks at SportsLine.

2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf expert picks

Matsuyama's history in Scottsdale and his recent run on tour have Gates fully backing him this week. The Japanese star has won twice in his past four tour events. He had to withdraw after a first-round 69 as he went for a third straight Phoenix win in 2018. He has finished in the top 25 in six of his seven appearances. He is 67 under par over his past four tournaments, and he is 20th in scoring average (70.052) and ranks 22nd in greens in regulation (74.4 percent) this season.

Meanwhile, the expert knows Hovland has been on fire but is slightly fading him this week as the Norwegian returns from a successful run in Europe. The world's third-ranked golfer won in Dubai and finished top-five at Abu Dhabi, but that could leave him weary. He tied for 30th in his last tour event, at the Sentry in early January. He has wins at Mayakoba and the unofficial Hero World Challenge, so Gates won't count him out, but Hovland is outside the top five in his rankings.

How to set your 2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf rankings

For this week at TPC Scottsdale, the fantasy expert is backing a massive long shot who is listed at around 40-1. This veteran has been on fire in recent weeks, shooting in the 60's in 12 of his last 15 rounds and posting impressive results. He has been hitting a lot of greens and putting well, which is always a recipe for success in Scottsdale. Gates sees him as a must-play for your Waste Management Fantasy golf picks.
