Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte fight results, highlights: 'Gypsy King' thrills with uppercut knockout to retain

Fury landed a picturesque right hand that sent Whyte thudding to the floor for the finish inside Wembley Stadium

Dillian Whyte waited years as the "next man up" for the WBC heavyweight championship. Whyte's opportunity finally came on Saturday night in London and the dream opportunity turned into a nightmare as he was badly outboxed by Tyson Fury before being knocked out with a heavy uppercut in the final seconds of the sixth round.

Whyte tried to mix up his game from the jump, coming out in a southpaw stance. The tactics didn't seem to much bother Fury, as the champion fought his ideal gameplan, sticking to the outside and mixing jabs and lead left hooks with solid work to the body.

As the dominance mounted for Fury, Whyte seemed to get frustrated, leading to several clinches where heads clashed and elbows and rabbit punches were thrown. The referee lost control of the action in Round 4 as the two heavyweights refused to listen to his instructions to break.

Once the action settled back into something resembling a boxing match, Fury went right back to exercising control with his reach advantage, forcing Whyte to take more chances to close distance.

The Fury jab would eventually set up the finishing moment in Round 6 as he followed up a jab with a right uppercut that stunned Whyte and sent him crashing to the canvas. Whyte beat the count but as he attempted to walk to the referee, his balance was still not there and he stumbled into the ropes, leaving the referee no choice but to waive off the fight at the 2:59 mark of Round 6.

"Listen, Dillian Whyte is a warrior," Fury said after the fight. "I believe he'll be a world champion. But I'm one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and unfortunately for Dillian, he had to face me here tonight."  

The uppercut was similar to the shot from Alexander Povetkin that put Whyte to sleep in their 2020 contest. Whyte would come back to avenge that loss, but he likely won't get that opportunity as Fury's next step would likely be a four-belt unification bout -- or the retirement he once again promised following the fight.

"You know, I promised my lovely wife that after the Wilder 3 fight, that fight would be it and I meant it," Fury said. "But I got offered to fight at Wembley at home and I believed I deserved and owed it [to the fans]. Now it's all done. I have to be a man of my word and I think this is it. This might be the final curtain of the Gypsy King."

Elsewhere on the card, Ekow Essuman took care of business against Darren Tetley for a unanimous decision win. Nick Ball beat down Isaac Lowe before the referee came in to stop the contest in the sixth round. And Fury's half brother Tommy returned to action to handle Daniel Bocianski by referee's decision over six rounds.

Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 6: Whyte continued to struggle to get inside, missing with a wild right hand only to have Fury catch him and pin him against the ropes before talking to the challenger. Fury landed a little right against the ropes and then hit a one-two as Whyte continued to chase. Seconds before the end of the round Fury hit a massive uppercut that dropped Whyte to the canvas! Whyte to his feet and he tries to walk forward and stumbles and this one is over. Once again, Whyte is felled by a massive uppercut! What a showing! Official result: Tyson Fury def. Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 5: The referee spoke to both men before the round, trying to bring things back under control. Fury worked two heavy shots to the body and got back to range to throw his jab. Fury stuck to that comfortable range, jabbing and when Whyte lunged in, landing a left hand and circling away. Fury started to loosen up, throwing punches from all angles, hitting to the body and head and easily sliding out of way of the wild return fire from Whyte. Fury seemed to buzz him a bit with a one-two combo to the head. Whyte is only rarely landing punches and almost nothing he has done has been significant as Fury may simply too far too good. Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 4: Fury landed a big overhand right early in the round and the two men threw a few punches in the clinch as the referee tried to separate them. Both men receive a very stiff warning from the referee and Whyte also suffered a cut from the situation. Fury landed a good left hook to the chin and Whyte tried to get inside and rough it up but continued to run into punches from Fury before another very rough clinch. Whyte dug his elbow into Fury's face in another clinch and the fight is getting out of hand as they brawl in the clinch again and the referee can not separate the fighters. Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 3: Both men came out in orthodox stances this round and Fury worked his left hand early and Whyte tried to bull rush in. Fury responded with a big left hand. Fury got the right hand off again and Whyte continued to fight from just a bit too far outside. Whyte did manage to get in one left hand on the inside before Fury dug in a body shot and a one-two combo upstairs. Another round in the books for the champion, it would seem. Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 2: Whyte switched back to orthodox to open the second, which Fury met by switching his own stance to southpaw. Fury brought a left hand around Whyte's guard and landed to the side of the head before switching back to orthodox. Fury landed another good left hook as Whyte lunged in. Whyte continued to have trouble with the range, with Fury able to poke away until Whyte dove inside and tried to brawl but ate a right hand for his trouble. This is going to be a very, very long (or short) night for Whyte if he can't figure out how to manage distance against the taller champion. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Fury (20-18)

Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte -- Round 1: Whyte was most of the way across the ring before the bell rang, trying to take the center before the fight even began. Fury was happy to circle around the outside and fet a feel with his jab as Whyte tried to throw his own jab to the body. Whyte also opened from a southpaw stance, which was a bit unexpected but didn't seem to throw Fury off much. Fury landed the first solid shot of the fight with a right hand to the top of Whyte's head. Whyte kept poking to the body but had trouble figuring out how to really close the distance and ate another hard right hand late as he got caught lunging at the champ.
