The 2022 U.S. Open is officially underway in Brookline, Massachusetts, with a number of star-studded groupings set to make headlines at The Country Club beginning Thursday. Fresh off his second PGA Tour victory of the season and 21st win overall, new favorite Rory McIlroy will look to get off on the right foot just as he did at the 2022 PGA Championship as he continues to play some of the best golf he's put forward in years.
The Northern Irishman commanded the first-round lead at Southern Hills after firing a 5-under 65 last month, and he kicked off his U.S. Open in the early morning alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele. This trio is one of a few notable groupings off in the morning hours at The Country Club. A few more favorites who are part of the morning wave include Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay and Will Zalatoris.
These competitors will be granted the luxury of being off the golf course when polarizing figures Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson will be playing. Johnson, the 2016 U.S. Open champion, is set to go off at 1:36 p.m. with Webb Simpson and Matt Fitzpatrick, the latter of which won the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club. Meanwhile, Mickelson, a six-time runner-up in the U.S. Open, will play with fellow major champions Louis Oosthuizen and Shane Lowry at 1:47 p.m.
Given that The Country Club will be hosting a U.S. Open for the first time since 1988, there will likely be a lot of adjusting to do across the first 18 holes of competition.
