Head coach Todd McLellan said Thursday that Larkin (upper body) will be out for Friday's game against the Rangers and Sunday's game against the Jets, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports.
Larkin was sidelined during training camp due to an upper-body injury but has been practicing recently. He's considered day-to-day, but he'll be held out for the Red Wings' first two games of the regular season. Across 74 regular-season appearances with Detroit last year, the 30-year-old logged 34 goals, 33 assists, 48 PIM, 46 hits and 33 blocked shots while averaging 20:11 of ice time. Larkin requested a trade during the offseason but appears to be set to suit up for the Red Wings once he's healthy.

Larkin could ultimately remain in Detroit for the start of the 2026-27 season, Michael Whitaker of The Hockey News reports Wednesday.
Larkin's trade request that was made public in June generated plenty of buzz during the offseason, but the Red Wings haven't yet a trade partner. He submitted a short list of teams that he would like Detroit to trade him to, a list that was believed to include Florida, Minnesota and Vegas. While the 30-year-old has presumably garnered ample interest on the trade market, the Red Wings may ultimately elect to keep him in the fold if they don't receive an offer they feel is suitable. The Red Wings are also searching for a new general manager after Steve Yzerman stepped down in July and will be playing without Patrick Kane in 2026-27 after he returned to Chicago during the offseason, both of which could complicate potential trade talks as the regular season approaches.

Larkin found the back of the net midway through the opening period to tie the game at one apiece. With the twine finder, Detroit's captain is up to 31 goals, 61 points, 218 shots on net, 46 hits and 33 blocked shots through 71 games this season. He also recorded an assist Tuesday, which helped him secure his fifth consecutive 30-30 season. Since returning from a leg injury, he has six points and 28 shots on net over his last eight games.
