2014 Draft Prep: 12-team Roto mock draft

Which players should you target in your categories league this season? We get a diverse group together for our initial Roto mock draft fo the year.

There's usually a pretty clear difference between the in-house mock drafts we put together and the ones that include an amalgamation of writers from across the Fantasy interwebs. So our latest 12-team Rotisserie draft, which included both in-house and outside writers, yielded some very useful results.

Some players went ahead of their current ADP, like Joakim Noah in the second round or Victor Olidipo in the fourth. But for the season-long statistical marathon that is Roto, it makes sense that picks wouldn't just fall into some hierarchy of perceived value -- rather, they sprout from necessity and team-building strategy.

This draft came days before the Kevin Durant injury news broke, so keep that in mind while perusing results. A Jones fracture in his right foot will likely require surgery and could keep him out for two months.

You'll probably see him slide to the middle or even late picks of the first round, but the fact that he was in another statistical galaxy last year means he probably won't fall to the second round, but we'll know more as additional info about the injury is released. This also gives Westbrook a slight boost for how much the Thunder will rely on him to score in the early going.

We also didn't know about Bradley Beal's wrist surgery, meaning he'll probably slide down a round in your draft if the believed 6-8 week timetable is accurate. Rajon Rondo fell to the beginning of round six even with his reported optimism about beating his own 6-8 week timetable.

It's difficult to say there's such a thing as a bad pick in Roto because, as long as your team strikes the right balance between categories, it's going to be successful no matter what order pieces were selected in. That being said, I think I'm partial to Dave Richard's team, which has high-usage but efficient players at its core in LeBron James, Al Horford and Goran Dragic, and is rounded out by specialists like Ryan Anderson and Robin Lopez.

The young over the proven? The iron-clad over the injury risk? The good at everythings or the great at somethings? There are many decisions to make in a Roto draft. Hopefully, these results show you the different approaches you can take on Draft Day.
