The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee on Saturday revealed its top 16 teams as things stand entering the weekend with only 22 days left until Selection Sunday. The seventh annual in-season reveal, as part of the NCAA March Madness Men's Bracket Preview on CBS, came with very few surprises at the top as Gonzaga, Auburn, Arizona and Kansas — all AP-ranked top-six teams — captured No. 1 seeds.
Gonzaga earned the No. 1 overall seed by the committee thanks to its near-flawless 22-2 record strengthened by a 5-2 mark against Quadrant 1 opponents. The Bulldogs have spent the entire season ranked inside the top five in the AP poll and were a projected No. 1 seed by CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm entering the weekend. The No. 1 overall seed would put them in the West Region where Duke would be the No. 2 seed, Illinois would be the No. 3 seed and Texas would be the No. 4 seed.
Auburn came in as the second No. 1 seed after it, too, has spent a huge chunk of its regular season inside the top five of the rankings (and even had a run at No. 1). The Tigers would be in the Midwest Region with No. 2 seed Purdue, No. 3 seed Texas Tech and No. 4 seed UCLA.
"Gonzaga and Auburn in the committee room, they're very close, razor thin," selection committee chair Tom Burnett said on CBS. "We had extended discussions between these two teams. Likewise, I would tell you that between Auburn and Arizona, that's also razor thin. Lot of discussion between those two teams for the No. 2 overall seed."
The final No. 1 seeds were the aforementioned Arizona and Kansas, respectively, in the South and East Regions. Arizona got a tough draw with No. 2 seed (and No. 5 overall team) Baylor in its regional and No. 3 seed Tennessee and No. 4 seed Providence, too. Kansas as part of the in-season reveal also got a tough draw with Kentucky landing as the No. 2 seed in its region, Villanova landing the No. 3 seed and Wisconsin the No. 4 seed.
