College basketball marathon: Predictions to get you ready for 30 hours of hoops
One of the biggest days of the year for hoops junkies is here
It used to be nicknamed "24 hours of college basketball" because it used to be about 24 hours. But now it's closer to 30. And it includes 11 men's games, two women's games, and teams from 16 different conferences.
It starts Monday night at 6 ET.
It'll likely end around midnight ET Tuesday.
Here's something to get you ready for ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon ...
Game 1
Matchup: No. 3 UConn at No. 12 Florida State (women)
Time: 6 p.m. ET
Thoughts: UConn's Geno Auriemma has won a record 11 national championships, three Olympic gold medals and been named the Naismith National Coach of the Year seven times, meaning he's an all-time great coach regardless of sport. His program has won four straight NCAA Tournaments and is on an incredible 75-game winning streak that the Huskies will be trying to extend to 76 on the road against a Florida State team that made the Sweet 16 last season.
Prediction: UConn 81, Florida State 63
Actual final score: UConn 78, Florida State 76
Game 2
Matchup: No. 8 Texas at No. 11 Stanford (women)
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Thoughts: Though Auriemma is the sport's leader in national titles, he's not No. 1 in wins. That honor still belongs to the late Pat Summitt, who has 1,098. And second on the list is Stanford's Tara VanDerveer -- a Hall of Famer who enters this game with 982 career wins. She has two national titles and is a four-time National Coach of the Year. So if you want to see two of the best women's coaches ever -- Auriemma and VanDerveer -- they'll be on display in the first two games of the Tip-off Marathon.
Prediction: Stanford 69, Texas 64
Actual final score: Stanford 71, Texas 59
Game 3
Matchup: Princeton at BYU
Time: 10 p.m. ET
Thoughts: Neither team is ranked. So this game won't show up on Top 25 scoreboards. But it's a sneaky good matchup between a pair of top-50 KenPom schools that could both end up in the NCAA Tournament. BYU's Nick Emery is worth your attention. The sophomore guard made 38.3 percent of the 253 3-pointers he attempted last season while averaging 16.3 points per game. BYU is favored at home, sure. But this is a challenging opener for Dave Rose's Cougars.
Prediction: BYU 78, Princeton 73
Actual final score: BYU 82, Princeton 73
Game 4
Matchup: San Diego State at No. 14 Gonzaga
Time: 12 a.m. ET
Thoughts: Four San Diego State regulars, including Malik Pope, missed Friday's opener against San Diego, and at least two, including Pope, won't be available for the Aztecs' second game either. Simply put, it's hard to imagine a short-handed team winning at The Kennel considering the talent on, and depth of, Gonzaga's roster. So this is a tough spot for San Diego State, which will have to, among other things, slow down Gonzaga point guard Nigel Williams-Goss. The Washington transfer is the West Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year. He got 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a season-opening victory over Utah Valley.
Prediction: Gonzaga 74, San Diego State 64
Actual final score: Gonzaga 69, San Diego State 48
Game 5
Matchup: Green Bay at Pacific
Time: 2 a.m. ET
Thoughts: This is always the type of game I point to when I hear administrators talk about the importance of academics because it's those same administrators who schedule games to tip at 11 p.m. local time on a school night whenever a television network tells them to do it. But that's a column for another day. In the meantime, if you want to watch former NBA Rookie of the Year Damon Stoudamire coach, this is your opportunity. He's in his first year as Pacific's head coach after spending five seasons as an assistant at Memphis and Arizona.
Prediction: Green Bay 81, Pacific 78
Actual final score: Pacific 76, Green Bay 58
Game 6
Matchup: Florida Atlantic at Hawaii
Time: 4:15 a.m. ET
Thoughts: Hawaii is still waiting to learn whether it will be eligible for the 2017 NCAA Tournament. But a season-opening loss to SIU Edwardsville suggests it might not matter either way. And Florida Atlantic opened its season with a loss to Texas State. So, seriously, get some sleep. Only Florida Atlantic fans, Hawaii fans and absolute maniacs should be watching this game at this time.
Prediction: Hawaii 74, Florida Atlantic 68
Actual final score: Hawaii 64, Florida Atlantic 63
Game 7
Matchup: Niagara at Hartford
Time: 6:30 a.m. ET
Thoughts: Niagara and Hartford enter this game with a combined 0-3 record featuring losses to Buffalo, Brown and Central Connecticut after combining to go 17-48 last season. So if you're up getting ready for work or school, or preparing the kids for school, sure, turn it on and know that Hartford's John Gallagher is a fun guy who is now in his seventh season as a head coach. But short of that, there's not much here. So sleep in, if you can.
Prediction: Hartford 68, Niagara 65
Actual final score: Hartford 82, Niagara 78 OT
Game 8
Matchup: Winthrop at Manhattan
Time: 8:45 a.m. ET
Thoughts: Manhattan is getting creative in an attempt to make its game with the projected Big South champs look as good as possible for TV. The school launched a #JavaWithTheJaspers campaign where fans are receiving complimentary admission, coffee and baked goods. So, if you're in the area, you can get a free breakfast just by going to Winthrop-Manhattan. And who doesn't love free breakfast?
Prediction: Manhattan 77, Winthrop 76
Actual final score: Winthrop 94, Manhattan 81
Game 9
Matchup: Longwood at Stephen F. Austin
Time: 11 a.m. ET
Thoughts: The post-Brad Underwood era is underway in Nacogdoches. Former Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M assistant Kyle Keller is now in charge and with massive shoes to fill considering Underwood went 89-14 in three seasons at Stephen F. Austin, which led to Underwood receiving an offer that he accepted from Oklahoma State. Also gone: Thomas Walkup. So there's no guarantee the Lumberjacks will be in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. Regardless, Keller should get his first career win here.
Prediction: Stephen F. Austin 79, Longwood 58
Actual final score: Stephen F. Austin 66, Longwood 60
Game 10
Matchup: Dayton at Alabama
Time: 1:15 p.m. ET
Thoughts: Now it's time to start paying attention because this is a fun matchup that could have NCAA Tournament ramifications. Archie Miller's Dayton Flyers have been picked to win the Atlantic 10 and are expected to make the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. Meantime, everything in the SEC seems up for grabs after Kentucky. And if Alabama moves to 2-0 with a victory over Dayton, it might be time to consider the possibility of Avery Johnson guiding the Crimson Tide to the Field of 68 in just his second year as a college basketball coach.
Prediction: Dayton 70, Alabama 68
Actual final score: Dayton 77, Alabama 72
Game 11
Matchup: No. 4 Oregon at Baylor
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET
Thoughts: Oregon is the Pac-12 favorite and ranked fifth in the Associated Press poll. But the Ducks are in a total coin-flip game here because unranked Baylor is 30th at KenPom and at full-strength, and because Dillon Brooks, a First Team Preseason CBS Sports All-American, is still recovering from foot surgery. Can Brooks' teammates do enough to help the Ducks avoid an early road loss? That's the question heading into this game between two teams that should both end up in the NCAA Tournament.
Prediction: Baylor 73, Oregon 72
Actual final score: Baylor 66, Oregon 49
Game 12
Matchup: No. 2 Kentucky vs. No. 13 Michigan State in New York
Time: 7 p.m. ET
Thoughts: The first game of the Champions Classic features two Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame coaches (John Calipari and Tom Izzo) and four projected first-round picks of the 2017 NBA Draft (Kentucky's Bam Adebayo, De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk, and Michigan State's Miles Bridges), according to DraftExpress. So this is good. But Michigan State lost two rotation players in the preseason. And UK lost zero. So Calipari's young team should be able to handle Izzo's young team that's at risk of falling to 0-2 after a season-opening loss to Arizona.
Prediction: Kentucky 75, Michigan State 67
Actual final score: Kentucky 69, Michigan 48
Game 13
Matchup: No. 1 Duke vs. No. 7 Kansas in New York
Time: 9:30 p.m. ET
Thoughts: It's been clear for a while that five-star freshman Harry Giles wouldn't be available for this game, and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said he doesn't expect five-star freshmen Jayson Tatum or Marques Bolden to play against Kansas either. In other words, the Blue Devils could be without their three most-heralded recruits, and that might be too much to overcome against a Kansas team that's 0-1 with a loss to Indiana but still undeniably good and the obvious pick to win the Big 12 for the 13th consecutive year.
Prediction: Kansas 83, Duke 82
Actual final score: Kansas 77, Duke 75
