Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon rushed for 251 yards in Thursday's Outback Bowl, finishing one of the greatest seasons for a tailback in college football history in second-place on the all-time FBS single-season

NCAA: Most Rushing Yards in Season
Player, Team Yards Year
Barry Sanders, Oklahoma St. 2,628 1988
Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin 2,587 2014
Kevin Smith, UCF 2,567 2007
Marcus Allen, USC 2,342 1981
Troy Davis, Iowa St. 2,185 1996

A Heisman Trophy finalist, Gordon needed 293 yards against Auburn to break Barry Sanders' record of 2,628 yards, set in 1988. Though Gordon fell 42 yards short, his final 2014 season tally of 2,587 yards moved him from fourth to second, ahead of USC's Marcus Allen and UCF's Kevin Smith.

It's worth noting that Sanders' record came in only 11 games, in which he averaged 238.9 yards per game. Gordon averaged 184.8 over 14 games.

Gordon was named the Outback Bowl MVP after his three touchdowns helped the Badgers outlast Auburn 34-31 in overtime. A junior, Gordon has already declared for the 2015 NFL Draft, making the win the final game of his college career.
