Mariners to activate Austin Jackson, option Danny Farquhar
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

The Mariners are set to activate outfielder Austin Jackson from the disabled list on Tuesday and option pitcher Danny Farquhar to Triple-A Tacoma, the team announced.

Jackson is on the 15-day DL with an ankle injury and has been out since the beginning of the month. Farquhar will clear space for Jackson after posting a 6.46 ERA and an 0-3 mark in 23 2/3 innings of work this season.

Mariners' Happ limited due to rain, Farquhar tagged with loss
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Mariners pitcher J.A. Happ was only able to pitch two innings during Thursday afternoon's 5-4 loss against the Orioles due to rain.

A two-hour delay ended Happ's day on the mound and forced the Mariners to go through six pitchers. However, Happ may have been pulled anyway because in those two innings he allowed four earned runs on four hits. He struck out three batters and walked two others.

Happ now has a 3.61 ERA for the season. This performance came after two consecutive games where he only allowed one earned run in each.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Danny Farquhar entered the game and surrendered an RBI single to J.J. Hardy. This would prove to be Baltimore's winning run for the game. Farquhar is now 0-3 with a 5.48 ERA this season.

For Happ, his next start is projected for May 26 against the Rays.

Mariners' McClendon on Farquhar: 'Something's not right'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said that "something's not right" with pitcher Danny Farquhar after he gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks while recording just one out in an 11-4 loss to the Padres, MLB.com reports.

"If I had to say I had one set guy for the eighth inning, it's probably more (Carson) Smith than anybody," McClendon said. "So it doesn't really change that. But it certainly limits our flexibility a little because Danny is so good at getting left-handers out as well. We need to get him back on track. He's just so vital to our success, we've got to get him right."

The manager indicated he wasn't scared of using Farquhar in tight situations while he tries to ride out his issues on the mound.

"I think the biggest thing is to get him back out there and let him pitch," McClendon said. "It's hard to straighten him out when he's not pitching. Obviously you'd like to have it in a lower-leverage situation right now, but if the matchup calls for it, I wouldn't be afraid to put him in late in games."

Farquhar believes his lack of command is the most obvious symptom of his struggles.

"I would say my cutter is not where I want it to be," he said. "The last couple years I could locate my cutter in, out, up, down. Do whatever I wanted with it. Right now it's not pinpoint. I think that's definitely a starting point. That's my bread-and-butter pitch, so I think everything works off that. Once I get that going, I think I'll be rolling."

Farquhar owns a 5.63 ERA and 13:7 K:BB ratio in 16 innings.

Mariners P Danny Farquhar OK after being hit by liner
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

Mariners pitcher Danny Farquhar is none the worse for wear after being struck with a line drive during a relief appearance Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Farquhar was struck on his non-pitching arm in the eighth inning, but the ball richocheted to the second baseman and the final out of the inning was recorded. Farquhar said he felt no ill effects Friday.

"I'm good. It's my non-important arm. It did leave a nice little tattoo though," said Farquhar, who has a 4.76 ERA in six spring appearances.

Mariners' Danny Farquhar 'a slow starter' in spring training
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mariners pitcher Danny Farquhar has earned a reputation as a slow starter in spring training, MLB.com reports. He struggled in his first two outings this spring as well before tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts Tuesday.

"I've come to understand he's a slow starter and he does struggle in the spring," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I told him the other day he should just go home and help the grounds crew and just stay there until the season starts, because my life would be a lot happier down here."

Farquhar is using the spring to work on his pitches and prepare for a long season.

"If you're trying to make a team or make an impression and you're not even on the 40-man roster, you've got to come out of the gate throwing 95 (mph)," Farquhar said. "You have to really show them you've got something. If not, you just kind of go back into the mix. Whereas I've pitched a year and a half in the big leagues, so Lloyd knows what I can do. So I guess it's a little easier track for me, but I still have to go out there and show Lloyd I can get major-league hitters out. I can't just roll out there and make the team."

Farquhar has surrendered two earned runs in 2 2/3 innings this spring.
