Chip Kelly: Ex-Eagle LeSean McCoy is 'wrong' on racial comments
Chip Kelly said on Thursday he disagrees with LeSean Mccoy and thinks the former running back is 'wrong' on his theory that Kelly's roster moves are racially based.
LeSean McCoy caused quite a stir when he made comments in an interview asserting some of Chip Kelly's personnel moves were race-related. (Stephen A. Smith really started the whole thing, though he did some back-peddle, two-step business on his comments.)
Kelly was asked about McCoy's claims when speaking to the media on Thursday and, via CBS Philly, called McCoy "wrong."
“I’ve got great respect for LeSean, however in that situation I think he’s wrong,” Kelly said. “We put a lot of time in looking at the characters and factors that go into the selection and retention of players, and color has never been one of them.”
Kelly added he wasn't hurt by McCoy's comments and that he twice tried to reach out to Shady to inquire about the running back's claims but never heard back.
“No, I reached out to him twice and he didn’t accept my call,” Kelly said. “And then I talked to his agent and told him I’d love to talk to him at some point in time, but I haven’t had a chance to touch base with him.”
The whole idea is asinine, really. DeSean Jackson and Chip didn't get along. Andy Reid and the Chiefs (over)paid Jeremy Maclin $11 million a year. And the Bills were willing to give the Eagles a stud young linebacker to take McCoy (a highly-paid running back with a heavy workload who doesn't run north to south) off the Eagles hands.
That's not disparaging those guys. McCoy's one of the best running backs in the game. But he didn't fit the construct of Kelly's roster. Neither did D-Jax. Maclin would've been back if Kansas City hadn't lured him.
Kelly spent the offseason signing plenty of African-American players. In short, he's not bothered by it.
“It doesn’t hurt me,” Kelly said. “I’m not governed by the fear of what other people say. Events don’t elicit feelings, I think beliefs elicit feelings. And I understand what my beliefs are and I know who I am.
“You start chasing perception and you got a long life ahead of you son. That’s what it’s all about it. You can control one thing and you can control yourself and I know how we run this organization and it’s not run that way."
