Ex-Redskins GM Scot McCloughan auctions team gear, raises $2,000 for charity
McCloughan has done nothing but take the high road since his dismissal on the first day of free agency
If Scot McCloughan is hurting after his strange divorce with the Redskins, he isn't showing it.
The former Redskins general manager, who was fired on the first day of free agency, recently auctioned off some of his old team gear. According to ESPN's John Keim, McCloughan raised $2,000 in all and gave half of that to the Redskins' charity.
Two autographed hats went for $1,000 total, which will be given to the Redskins Charitable Foundation. Meanwhile, a game-day suit jacket of McCloughan's went for another $1,000, which will be given to Northern Virginia Family Service.
Earlier this month, when the auction first made news, Scot McCloughan's wife, who came up with the idea, explained why the couple was giving back to the team that fired him.
"When it's all said and done, Scot and I are still grateful that we were able to come here, so why not give back to the people that brought us here," Jessica McCloughan told Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post. "The Charitable Foundation truly does a ton of stuff for kids in the D.C. area."
When McCloughan conducted his first interview with 106.7 The Fan, a CBS Sports Radio station, after losing his job, he took the high road by refusing to criticize a team that appears to be perpetually inept.
"There's good players there, and there's good character there, there's good chemistry there," he said, according to The Washington Post. "And that's what I tried to build and build and build. I wish I could have been here longer to see it come to fruition, but I can't, so it is what it is. But still, I'm gonna pull for them. I don't have any grudge. It is what it is. Again, it's a marriage that didn't work."
McCloughan is recovering from his breakup with the team by re-opening his scouting service in Colorado, while the Redskins appear to be moving on without a new general manager. For McCloughan, taking the high road is probably a smart move if he wants to get another job in the NFL. Though he's experienced plenty of success as a talent evaluator in the NFL, he has a history of problematic exits due to alcohol use.
His divorce from the Redskins certainly wasn't clean, but he's responded in the best possible way.
