As the trade rumors intensify and as Colin Kaepernick heads back to San Francisco to collect his bonus, the Broncos' current starting quarterback -- keyword: current -- is preparing as if the job is his to keep.

Mark Sanchez, as 9News in Denver first reported, is holding a passing camp in Orange County for the team's receivers, tight ends, and running backs from Monday to Wednesday. Fellow quarterback Trevor Siemian, according to Mike Klis, will also attend (just in case he wants to learn about the art of the butt-fumble).

Though the Broncos are reportedly trying to land Kaepernick in a trade with the 49ers -- with money as the reported holdup -- their current top quarterback is smart to gain a head start on mastering the offense. According to 9News, the camp, which Sanchez also held for the Jets and Eagles in previous years, will include "whiteboard sessions."

Even if the three days aren't really enough time for Sanchez to master the offense -- they aren't -- the camp is at least winning over some of his teammates.

"It shows he wants to come in and get to know us before OTAs start," receiver Bennie Fowler told 9News. "I think it's really good. It's going to help us get off to a good start."

If it all works out for the Broncos, Sanchez's preparation will turn him into a well-prepared backup -- not the starter -- for the upcoming season. As I've written about before, Sanchez isn't exactly a viable starting option in the league. He is, however, a decent backup, considering he brings plenty of experience as a starter and a backup to the table.

So, the Broncos would be wise to add a quarterback like Kaepernick. And if that trade doesn't work out, they'll need to turn to the draft. Even Siemian is expecting someone else to join the current two-man crew.

"From a distance I figured we'll probably add somebody," Siemian said. "And we'll probably draft somebody. I'll be ready to have four guys when we go to training camp."
