  • Panthers' Al Montoya: Delivers pedestrian effort in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/9/16) Montoya stopped 28 of 31 shots and got no offensive support at all en route to a 3-0 loss Monday night in Detroit.

While Montoya's surprisingly put up some of the prettiest backup-goalie numbers in the league and benefits from playing for a strong Panthers team, he doesn't draw a whole lot of starts behind Roberto Luongo, which muffles his fantasy value. He's also about as prime a regression candidate as you'll see -- those Luongo-esque rate stats don't fit the profile of a journeyman like Montoya. It'd be no surprise to see a few duds down the stretch put a dent in that .929 save mark.

Panthers' Al Montoya: Defending crease Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/8/16) Montoya will protect the net in Monday's matchup with Detroit, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Montoya had a fantastic last outing Feb. 2 against Washington, as he stopped 36 of 38 shots on goal. In his last five contests, including a relief appearance, the netminder has been rock solid and registering a 2.14 GAA along with snagging three wins.

Panthers' Al Montoya: Stands tall against Washington

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/3/16) Montoya was peppered by the Capitals on Tuesday, facing 38 shots and allowing just two goals on his way to win number eight on the season.

Starts have been infrequent, yet Montoya has been superb, logging a 8-2-1 record with a 1.93 GAA. Roberto Luongo will continue to see the bulk of the ice time for the Panthers, but on those rare rest days, the 30-year-old backup has ensured Florida remains the stingiest team in the league, allowing just 2.18 goals per game.

Panthers' Al Montoya: Starting Tuesday against Washington

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/1/16) Montoya will be between the pipes in Tuesday's game against the Capitals, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Montoya surrendered four goals on 24 shots faced in a loss to the Oilers in his last start Jan. 18. The 30-year-old veteran goaltender has played well overall this season, compiling a 7-2-1 record with a .929 save percentage and 1.92 GAA in 12 games played. He draws a tough matchup Tuesday against a Washington team that currently sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, due in part to their league-leading 3.32 goals scored per game average. Montoya has had success against the Capitals in two previous contests this season, earning a win and an overtime loss while giving up a total of just three goals.

Panthers' Al Montoya: Terrible in loss Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/18/16) Montoya gave up four goals on just 24 shots in a 4-2 loss to the visiting Oilers on Monday.

That's two straight losses for the Panthers' backup, who had won the previous five games in a row. Montoya's still got impressive numbers for the year (7-2-1 with a .929 save percentage and 1.92 GAA), but now that Florida's cooled off after their 12-game winning streak, Montoya's lost a bit of his lustre as one of hockey's best backup netminders.

April 2, 2015: Panthers' Montoya On Ice Before Practice Thursday
Montoya (groin) worked out with goaltending coach Robb Tallas and strength coach Tommy Powers before the Panthers' morning skate on Thursday, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.Montoya still hasn't been a participant in practice and with how well Dan Ellis has played in Montoya's absence (4-2-1 with a 2.11 GAA and a .922 save percentage), Montoya may be the odd man out if he returns this season at all.
