  • Canadiens' Al Montoya: Picks up sixth win of campaign

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/12/17) Montoya saved 23 of 27 shots during Wednesday's win over Winnipeg.

The veteran backup is proving to be a hit-or-miss start for the Habs and fantasy players, but Montreal remains atop the Atlantic Division, and Montoya has won three consecutive starts. While his .907 save percentage and 2.86 GAA barely move the needle, and it's not out of the question to rely on him solely as a streaming option or flier in daily contests, you don't want to ignore his potential to pick up a tidy win.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Sees green light for Wednesday's start

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/11/17) Montoya was first off the ice in morning skate Wednesday, indicating that he'll be the evening's road starter against the Jets, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

The Habs are starting to ramp up the rink-run for Montoya, as this will be his fourth appearance in the past nine games. His play has been spotty over 12 contests, having recorded a 2.76 GAA and .911 save percentage in that span, but he managed to skate away with wins in his last two outings -- defeats over the Panthers and Stars, respectively. While his peripheral numbers aren't so hot, fantasy players in leagues that heavily emphasize the 'W' can view Montoya as a viable streaming option since the Habs are current leaders of the Atlantic Division with 56 points in the standings.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Makes 39 saves to beat Stars

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/5/17) Montoya stopped 39 of 42 shots during Wednesday's overtime win against Dallas.

After losing five consecutive starts, Montoya has now won back-to-back games with just five goals allowed (2.48 GAA) and an impressive .933 save percentage. He isn't going to receive many looks behind a healthy Carey Price, but in deeper leagues, Montoya is a serviceable depth goalie to plug in when receiving the starting nod. Additionally, the backup is fully on the streamer radar and a potential low-priced flier in daily contests.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Scheduled to start Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/4/17) Montoya is expected to start Wednesday against Dallas, the second night of a back-to-back set, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Fresh off signing a two-year extension, Montoya gets an opportunity to prove his value against the Stars, who rank 18th in goals scored this season.

Canadiens' Al Montoya: Signs two-year extension Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/2/17) Montoya signed a two-year, $1.065 million contract with the Canadiens on Monday.

The goalie has a decent backup this year, with a .909 save percentage, but has been hot lately with a .925 save percentage and 1.97 GAA in four games in December. With Carey Price on the roster, Montoya won't be asked to do much, but when he is called in to give Price a break, he is a reliable replacement.

April 2, 2015: Panthers' Montoya On Ice Before Practice Thursday
Montoya (groin) worked out with goaltending coach Robb Tallas and strength coach Tommy Powers before the Panthers' morning skate on Thursday, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.Montoya still hasn't been a participant in practice and with how well Dan Ellis has played in Montoya's absence (4-2-1 with a 2.11 GAA and a .922 save percentage), Montoya may be the odd man out if he returns this season at all.
