World Cup Qualifying: USMNT obliterated and embarrassed by Costa Rica 4-0
U.S. has zero points from two games
After the 2-1 home defeat to Mexico on Friday to kick off the hexagonal round of World Cup Qualifying, the USMNT needed to rebound on Tuesday at Costa Rica or see its road to Russia campaign take a bit of a turn south.
It went further south than anyone expected.
Costa Rica dominated the U.S. for most of the match and secured a convincing 4-0 victory as the Americans fall to 0-2 in the group after an embarrassing performance.
Los Ticos scored late in the first half and then got three more in 10 second-half minutes, with Joel Campbell scoring twice.
The visitors rarely looked like a threat and failed to test Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas much at all as the hosts ran wild, avenging a 4-0 loss to the USMNT in this summer's Copa America.
With the loss, the U.S. has zero points from two games in the hex. World Cup Qualifying returns in March. But will Jurgen Klinsmann return?
Under pressure since the 2015 Gold Cup, he guided the team to an impressive fourth-place finish this summer at the Copa America. But his days may be numbered after two performances that have left fans wondering if this team actually can play like one.
