2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am leaderboard: Wyndham Clark shoots course-record 60 to lead Ludvig Åberg

Shooting 3 over through his first 12 holes at 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Wyndham Clark has seen quite a turnaround playing his last 42 holes in 20 under to sit atop the leaderboard after three rounds of play. Coming up just short of becoming the 13th man to card a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour -- fifth to do so on a par 72 -- the U.S. Open champion settled for a 12-under 60 on Saturday.

Clark's career low clipped the previous competitive record at Pebble Beach by a pair and will see the 30-year-old take a one-stroke lead over Ludvig Åberg (-16) into Sunday's final round.

"I didn't even visualize a day this good. It was honestly surreal," Clark said after his round. "When you get out in the day and start out as good as I did, you kind of get in the zone and then you get to the back nine and that's when you start thinking about 59. I'm honestly really proud with how I played to shoot a score like I did on this golf course was pretty special."

Clark's third round began with a par, but the fireworks soon followed in a flurry. He took the lid off the cup with an eagle conversion from just inside 40 feet on the par-5 2nd and added another par breaker a couple holes later on the par-4 4th. Clark stood at 3 under through four holes, which isn't necessarily special given Pebble Beach's gettable opening stretch, but what happened next turned a strong start into a memorable day.

The world No. 10 added his second eagle on the par-5 6th outdoing his earlier effort on the green by connecting from 42 feet. A tap-in birdie on the short downhill par-3 7th came next before unlikely bids from 29 feet and 25 feet fell on the difficult par-4 8th and par-4 9th.

Clark turned in 8-under 28 thanks to a massive performance on the greens that included holing more than 150 feet worth of putts. He is the fourth player to shoot 28 on the front nine at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am history joining Spike McRoy, Davis Love III and Brent Schwarzrock, according to Justin Ray.

Unlike the others, though, Clark wasn't done. Four birdies in his first five holes on the closing side sandwiched an impressive bogey that he will look back on with a smile. Wiping his tee shot on the par-3 12th into a plugged lie in a greenside bunker, Clark hit his second near the top of another greenside bunker setting up an awkward stance. He decided to play his third from the other side of the plate and ran his ball through the green and was looking double in the face. However, as he did all day, Clark converted from an unlikely distance and kept the dream of a sub-60 round alive.

"Where I really thought it was special was on 12 where I made that bogey save," said Clark. "To follow it up with a great bounce back, which is a stat that we really focus on, and making that 12-footer on 13 was huge."

From Nos. 6-14, Clark did not card a single par. This nine-hole run preceded a stretch of three pars that included near birdies on 16 and 17. Leaving his putts in the heart on both occasions, Clark went to the par-5 finisher needing his third eagle of the round in order to card a 59. He give himself a chance by lacing a 4 iron to 25 feet -- a comfortable distance on Saturday -- but it was not meant to be as two putts were ultimately required.

Still, Clark has positioned himself for another big-time victory at another big-time venue. Entering the winner's circle for the first time in his career only this past spring, his affinity for big game hunting is apparent. Quail Hollow Club, Los Angeles Country Club and now possibly Pebble Beach Golf Links -- that's a hell of a trio at which to possibly raise one's first three trophies.

The leaders

1. Wyndham Clark (-17)
2. Ludvig Åberg (-16)

Åberg's third round may not have featured the same fireworks, but it was chock full of patience, persistence and wise decisions. That's a recipe for success around Pebble Beach as the Swede holstered his driver in the early stages and was met with just one birdie through his first five holes. The driver set up for one on the par-5 6th before a sensible approach on the difficult 8th added another.

He grabbed his fourth birdie of the round during a walk-and-talk with CBS, cruising to the finish while never looking out of sorts or out of position. After a slow start to his 2024, Åberg has been thriving over these last two weeks at U.S. Open venues -- a sign of things to come in his immediate future.

Other contenders

3. Matthieu Pavon (-15)
T4. Mark Hubbard, Thomas Detry (-14)
T6. Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Tom Hoge, Scottie Scheffler (-13)
10. Sam Burns (-12)

After looking so comfortable on the greens Friday, Scheffler was somewhat out of sorts Saturday. The world No. 1 employed an aggressive game plan -- likely due to the possibility of a 54-hole tournament -- and it proved ineffective. Fighting a left miss early, Scheffler failed to take advantage of the most scoreable stretch at Pebble Beach.

He turned in even par, and despite some better-looking swings and some better-looking strokes (intertwined with a few ugly ones) with the blade on the back side, it was not enough to keep pace with the likes of Clark and Åberg. He's only four back, but Scheffler has now held at least a share of the 36-hole lead in two of his four starts this season with both Saturdays proving to be his undoing.

What happens next?

Sunday's weather outlook is bleak. Heavy rains are expected to roll into the area and high winds with gusts up to 60 mph are forecasted. Because of this, it is possible the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am finishes Monday for the second straight season. While this normally would not be an issue, the forecast for Monday has some question marks as well.

The PGA Tour has stated, if Sunday's round is delayed until Monday and half the field can finish their fourth round on Monday, they will bleed this tournament into Tuesday. If half the field does not finish the final round Monday, the tournament will be cut to 54 holes, much to the delight of Clark.

2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am odds, picks

  • Wyndham Clark: 7/4
  • Ludvig Åberg: 21/10
  • Matthieu Pavon: 8-1
  • Scottie Scheffler: 11-1
  • Justin Thomas: 14-1
  • Thomas Debtry: 14-1
  • Mark Hubbard: 18-1
  • Jason Day: 22-1

It may not be the wisest to lay a wager on this event given the uncertainty of the finish. There are some options down the board that present intrigue like Day at 22-1 just four adrift, but there is no shame in reserving some capital for a rather large football game on CBS next Sunday.

Ludvig lets big chance slip by

A missed birdie on 14 and another on 16 have left Ludvig Aberg wondering what if. He remains two strokes behind Wyndham Clark, but it could have been a much more effective day for the young Swede. He remains bogey free and is in fine position, but with weather rolling in, every stroke matters.

JT trying to keep pace

He is four adrift with three holes remaining and a strong finish could be massive for Justin Thomas. After a quiet middle to his round, Thomas added a birdie on 15 to reach 13 under. If he grabs two more to only trail Wyndham Clark by a pair, he will be firmly in the mix.

Two-horse race developing?

If the field isn't careful, this tournament could turn into a two-horse race. Ludvig Aberg will have a good chance to catch Wyndham Clark who is in the clubhouse at 17 under after his stellar 60. Aberg has two par 5s remaining and is only two adrift.

He has a look

Wyndham Clark needs his third eagle of the day to break 60 and he will have a look! He is on the surface in two and will have roughly 30 feet for history — that has been his range today.
