Wilder vs. Arreola results: Wilder retains WBC crown after corner stoppage
Wilder scored another TKO on Saturday night, stopping Arreola after eight rounds
The Bronze Bomber is a bad man. Deontay Wilder improved to 37-0 (36 KOs) with a stoppage of Chris Arreola (36-5, 31 KOs) after the eighth round to retain his WBC heavyweight title in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday night.
Arreola's corner called a stoppage to the fight after taking significant damage from Wilder -- particularly the jab -- that peppered Arreola's face and had opened up a cut over his nose and had both eyes swollen. Wilder put Arreola down in the fourth round with a flurry that including some heavy right hands, and nearly knocked him out, but it was in that flurry that Wilder broke his hand.
For the last four rounds of the fight, Wilder threw almost exclusively left jabs and hooks and still dominated Arreola. His execution and sharpness put to rest any questions about his focus after losing the Alexander Povetkin fight after Povetkin was flagged for a positive drug test.
Wilder continues to improve as a technical fighter -- he had to lean even more on his boxing skills in this fight after injuring his hand -- and looks ready for the challenge of the top level of fighter.
After the fight, he said he wanted to unify the division and would welcome fights with any of the titleholders and potential titleholders -- Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury or Wladimir Klitschko. He'll have to rest and rehab his injuries from this fight before any of those can happen, but hopefully in 2017, we'll get to see a significant title unification bout featuring Wilder so he can prove that he is indeed the baddest heavyweight on the planet.
