Johnson, Day control fate in FedEx Cup finale as Fowler falls outside field
Thirty golfers will tee it off at East Lake, but Rickie Fowler will not be among them
The final 30 is set. The Tour Championship at East Lake will include the following golfers who rank 1-30 in the latest FedEx Cup points update after Dustin Johnson took the BMW Championship on Sunday.
Nos. 1-5 all control their own destiny in that, if any of those five win the Tour Championship, they also automatically win the FedEx Cup (and $10 million first prize). Anyone else hoping for the bonus needs to win and get from the top five (i.e. they will need those players to finish far back enough that the point disparity works in their favor).
- Dustin Johnson
- Patrick Reed
- Adam Scott
- Jason Day
- Paul Casey
- Rory McIlroy
- Jordan Spieth
- Russell Knox
- Emiliano Grillo
- Jimmy Walker
- Brandt Snedeker
- Justin Thomas
- Phil Mickelson
- Ryan Moore
- Kevin Chappell
- Matt Kuchar
- Hideki Matsuyama
- Si Woo Kim
- Kevin Kisner
- Gary Woodland.
- Roberto Castro
- Kevin Na
- William McGirt
- Bubba Watson
- Sean O'Hair
- Daniel Berger

One notable missing from this final 30 is Rickie Fowler, who finished just outside the field. Fowler needed either a birdie or a bogey from J.B. Holmes on the final hole on Sunday to get into the field, but Holmes made par and put Fowler out.
This is going to create some tension in the Ryder Cup captain's picks.
United States captain Davis Love III will select three of his four picks on Monday, and Fowler was expected to be among those selected. That gets a little tougher when you're not one of the top 30 on the PGA Tour, but I suspect he will still be in when Love makes his choices. I would throw Holmes and Matt Kuchar in that group to be selected on Monday as well with the final pick to come after the Tour Championship.
