Hanley Ramirez's recent clubhouse temper tantrum -- a snit that ended in his punching a cooling fan -- has landed him in the hospital with an infected hand, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports. Ramirez was back at the ballpark on Friday, pinch-running in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Pirates.
Despite his pinch-running appearance, Ramirez is expected to miss a couple of days. And if that weren't bad enough, Ramirez's infection was preventable, according to manager Ozzie Guillen. Guillen told reporters that Ramirez didn't take his prescribed medication, leading to the infection.
"Hopefully the doctor will find exactly what he needs and make sure baby Hanley takes (it). I will every night 'open your mouth' and put it in his mouth," Guillen said, according to the Palm Beach Post. "How do you forget to take a pill that the doctors (tells) to take?"
Ramirez developed an infection where he received stitches and is likely to miss at least the next few games. Guillen said the hand was swollen and "pretty ugly and pretty sensitive."
On the season, Ramirez is hitting .246/.322/.430 with 14 home runs in 91 games. In other words, he's barely improved over last year's disappointing numbers.
While Ramirez is out, Greg Dobbs will likely be his replacement at third base.
