MLB Winter Meetings Hot Stove rumors: Mets, Orioles reportedly talking trade
Two teams with contrasting strengths are talking turkey at the Winter Meetings
The winter meetings began Monday, ensuring the next few days will feature a storm of rumors -- even those featuring two teams trying to match up as they trade from strengths to shore up weaknesses.
For an example, consider the rumor that popped up during the afternoon, involving the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles. Here's Ken Rosenthal:
Sources: #Mets, #Orioles talking. Orioles prefer Granderson to Bruce. Mets like reliever Brach.

It makes sense that the Mets and Orioles would talk: The Mets have excess outfielders thanks to the return of Yoenis Cespedes, and could use bullpen help -- not only are Fernando Salas and Jerry Blevins free agents, but closer Jeurys Familia's future is uncertain following his domestic incident. The Orioles, meanwhile, need some outfield help with Mark Trumbo's potential departure. Baltimore is skilled at finding cheap, quality relief help -- Brach himself acquired for a minor leaguer who later rejoined the O's.
So, sure. Why wouldn't the two sides talk? And why wouldn't the Orioles be more inclined to like Curtis Granderson, who has been more consistent over the past several years. (It's worth noting Granderson is the more expensive of the players, albeit by just $2 million.) Mutual incentive to make a trade doesn't always mean a trade will be made, but don't be too surprised if the two sides continue to talk.
