WATCH: Cubs-Giants battle of aces sees surprise home run by Arrieta off Bumgarner
Of all people, opposing pitcher Jake Arrieta got to Madison Bumgarner
Giants ace Madison Bumgarner entered Monday evening's Game 3 of the NLDS with a 23-inning scoreless streak in the postseason. In fact, he had a career 1.94 ERA, which includes three shutouts.
So the Giants had to be feeling pretty good about their chances of extending the series to Game 4. Another shutout wouldn't have even been all too surprising.
Instead, the Cubs put a three-spot on the board in the second inning. Addison Russell was hit by a pitch and Javier Baez worked a deep at-bat for a single. With two outs, Jake Arrieta -- yes, the opposing pitcher -- hit a three-run home run. He laced a line drive into the left-field seats and set off a frenzy in the Cubs' dugout:

Bumgarner on Sunday: "The last thing any pitcher wants to do is give up a hit to another pitcher."

That wasn't just a hit, either. It was a game-altering home run.
Also of note, Cubs reliever Travis Wood homered in Game 2 and this marks the first time since 1924 (the New York Giants) that a team has gotten multiple pitcher home runs in a postseason series (via Baseball Tonight).
Aside from coming off Bumgarner in the postseason -- which, wow -- Arrieta's bomb isn't too fluky. He hit .262 with two doubles, a triple and two homers in the regular season. He has four career regular-season home runs.
Again, though, this one was all kinds of different. Who would have ever thought when Bumgarner was finally touched up in the postseason that it would be at the hands of his counterpart?
