Tigers' Ausmus: Joba Chamberlain's our eighth-inning guy
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said definitively on Friday Joba Chamberlain will be the team's eighth-inning reliever moving forward, according to MLB.com.

Chamberlain has given up just one run in his last six appearances for Detroit after having a blow up inning on May 6.

"Obviously, being in the bullpen, you get the opportunity to be an everyday player," Chamberlain said. "So as things go, you're able to get on the bump and go after it. When you give up a few runs, you're able to get back out there the next day."

Chamberlain has a 1.38 ERA with nine strikeouts in 13 innings this season.

"Everything's going well," Chamberlain said. "We've just got to continue to work hard and, as long as these starters give us a chance, keep going deep in games. It's fun to watch those guys pitch. We've just gotta get the ball to the next guy."

Tigers' Joba Chamberlain gets out of jam in win Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain was called upon in the eighth inning of Monday's game against the Yankees with one out and runners on the corners, and he induced a Jacoby Ellsbury groundball that turned into a double play to get his team out of the inning in the eventual 2-1 win.

"I live for this stuff and these situations," Chamberlain said about the eighth-inning role, per MLive.com. "You get to face one of the best players in the league and get a chance to go do your thing."

Chamberlain threw just two pitches to rack up his two big outs Monday.

"He's had experience pitching in the eighth inning for us last year," manager Brad Ausmus said Monday. "And for the vast majority of the year he did it very well. I knew he could handle the pressure."

Chamberlain endured a rough spring but has posted 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his three appearances this season.

Tigers relievers see action Saturday in blowout loss
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Tigers relief pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny were able to get some extra work in Saturday against the White Sox in the 12-3 loss.

Both worked a scoreless inning, with Gorzelanny recording two strikeouts in his appearance.

"The thing is we've had one guy pitch however many days, which is great," said Gorzelanny to MLive.com. "I'm happy with that -- it means our starters are going deep and we're winning ballgames. I think everyone would like to get in there just to not only get work in, but save the rest of the guys.

"You want to get guys throw a few innings and save the rest of the bullpen. When they call and say we need to get you in there, I just try to do my job and get out of there as quick as possible."

Manager Brad Ausmus chalked it up to the ebbs and flows of how the starting pitchers do.

"It's tough to stay sharp when you've got starters going eight innings," Ausmus said. "As a reliever, you don't get a chance to get into a game situation. I don't read too much into what happened today."

Chamberlain to close Monday for Tigers, if Soria needs a day off
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Tigers closer Joakim Soria, who is filling in for injured closer Joe Nathan, might get the day off Monday against the Pirates after throwing three straight days. Manager Brad Ausmus indicated Joba Chamberlain would be the top option for a save opportunity Monday, if Soria is unavailable.

Soria is 2 for 2 in save chances since replacing the injury Nathan (elbow). Chamberlain has seven career saves, including two last season for Detroit.

Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain not worried about spring struggles
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain hasn't exactly lit it up in spring training. In eight appearances, Chamberlain has posted an 8.22 ERA with just two strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings pitched. He and his manager Brad Ausmus aren't worried, reports MLB.com.

"I've said all along that spring training, with veteran players especially, I don't put a lot of stock in it," Ausmus said. "I would go more on Joba's performance last year as an indicator than on what happens in Spring Training. I think Joba's also a guy that pitches on the adrenaline of the situation. And there's not a lot of adrenaline in spring training games, even moreso if you've been in the big leagues for a few years."

Chamberlain is throwing a bit harder this spring than previous years.

"This isn't my first rodeo. I've been in this position," Chamberlain said. "You've got to know what you have to work on. It's a neverending battle. I don't know if I've ever seen anybody with a zero-zero ERA, so there's always something to work on."
