Manager: Loss of two-seamer hurting Mets SP Jonathon Niese
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

In a mere two starts, Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese has gone from one of the hottest starters in the sport to one of the coldest.

And Terry Collins believes he has an explanation.

Niese was brilliant into early May. He was 3-2 with a 1.95 ERA after six outings. He was allowing baserunners, but consistently escaping jams. But in his last two starts  - both defeats - he has allowed 14 runs on 17 hits in 11 1/3 innings. His ERA has skyrocketed to 3.72.

Collins offered to NJ.com that the struggles are a result of Niese losing his two-seam fastball, likely because of a grip issue.

It has certainly resulted in fewer swings-and-misses. Niese has just three strikeouts in his last two starts combined after fanning 25 in his first 37 innings pitched.

Mets' Jonathon Niese gives up six in loss
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Mets starter Jonathon Niese dropped to 3-3 with a loss to the Cubs on Thursday.

Niese gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits, including a home run. He walked one and struck out two. Niese threw 90 pitches, 56 strikes.

"Just nothing went right," Niese said. "It was just kind of a mixture between everything -- bad luck, bad pitches. It's unfortunate. Our offense did a good job, got us a lead. It's unfortunate that we gave it up."

Niese's next start is Tuesday, against St. Louis.

Mets starter Jonathon Niese throws seven strong innings to earn victory
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Mets starter Jonathon Niese (3-2) did not allow an earned run and fanned six batters in seven innings of work to defeat the Phillies on Saturday.

The Phillies did all their damage in the sixth inning, using a leadoff error to open the door to plate both of their unearned runs.

"I felt good with all of my pitches," Niese said to ESPN.com. "I was able to get my curveball over when I needed to."

It's Niese's second straight strong start as he gave up just one run in seven innings but took the hard-luck loss in his previous outing.

"Well, my pitch count was down, and we have three innings left after the sixth," Niese said about being allowed to bat. "I thought it was the right move. It's much appreciated, that's for sure."

Neise is now 5-0 in his last seven starts against the Phillies.

Neise's next start is scheduled for Thursday in Chicago against the Cubs.

Mets lefty Jonathon Niese hard-luck loser to Nationals
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Giving up one run in seven innings is generally a recipe for victory. But not Saturday. Not for Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese. Not against Washington southpaw Gio Gonzalez.

Niese yielded one measly run for the fourth time in five starts this season and lost for the first time doing it. He scattered nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Only an RBI infield single by Michael Taylor in the second inning prevented him from blanking the Nationals.

Despite the defeat the effort was appreciated by teammate Michael Cuddyer.

"Anytime you lose it stinks, but especially when a guy gives you an effort like that and pitches as well as he did," Cuddyer told The Associated Press. "You feel like you let him down a little bit."

Niese will take his fine 2.40 ERA into a start next weekend against Philadelphia.
