New delivery helps take strain off Jonathon Niese's shoulder
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Nationals due to inclement weather. Instead, he got to work on his new delivery while throwing 76 pitches in a simulated game, per NJ.com.

Niese made the change last week after he started to experience more shoulder problems. Niese noticed his stride was off. He had been landing toward first base instead of home plate, which caused him to throw across his body. Once he made the change, Niese said the strain on his shoulder went away.

"My shoulder felt great," Niese said after throwing his simulated game. "Today I went out and worked on my stride, same thing I was working on in the bullpen. I felt great.

"Games like these all you're doing is getting your work load in, getting the volume up. You're working on your pitches but the results you really don't care because you're facing the same three or four guys every time."

Mets' Jonathon Niese: 'I'm 100 percent healthy'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese spoke Sunday about his new arm angle this spring, calling it a byproduct of being "100 percent healthy," NJ.com reports.

"Last year I was just trying to find an angle where it didn't hurt," Niese said about his shoulder. "This year, I'm 100 percent healthy so I'm able to actually work on my mechanics and have proper mechanics."

Niese gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings while throwing 52 pitches in Sunday's start. He said he's using the spring to tinker with his arsenal of pitches.

"Cutting loose on everything," he says. "My cutter and curveball need a little bit more work but there's plenty of time for that."

Niese went 9-11 with a 3.40 ERA and 138:45 K:BB ratio in 187 2/3 innings last season.

Mets' Jonathon Niese impressed by velocity after first intrasquad outing
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters he's impressed with Jonathon Niese's effort and health in Tuesday's intrasquad scrimmage, per the New York Post.

"His arm angle is much better, more velocity with his arm speed," Collins said. "He spent all winter making sure he was healthy because he doesn't want to go through those shoulder issues, and it has really paid off."

He tossed two shutout innings in his first outing of the spring. Niese, who had two MRI exams on his left arm in spring training last year, was impressed with his velocity this time around.

"My intrasquad last year, I don't think I threw over 80 mph," Niese said. "My shoulder and elbow felt great and my body feels good."

Report: Dillon Gee 'could be traded' by Mets in spring
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Mets RHP Dillon Gee was the subject of offseason trade rumors. That's understandable, since he arrived at spring training as one of six established starting pitchers on the Mets' staff.

The other candidates for the Mets' rotation are: LHP Zack Wheeler, 41-year-old RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jon Niese , RHP Jacob deGrom, who won last season's NL Rookie of the Year award and RHP Matt Harvey, returning after missing last year with arm surgery.

A source told ESPN New York that, although there wasn't much trade talk on the first day of camp, Gee "could be traded" during the spring, if the right deal came along.

Colon is also a candidate to be traded to clear the logjam in the starting rotation.

If the team keeps all six pitchers, Gee is the leading candidate to be sent to the bullpen for long relief and the occasional spot start.

Gee was 7-8, with a 4.00 ERA in 22 starts for the Mets last year. In his five MLB seasons, all with the Mets, he's 40-34, 3.91. His last relief appearance was in 2011.
