Nationals' Fister on reduced velocity: I'm 'dialing in the mechanics'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister has seen his average fastball velocity dip to 87.03 mph this season after his fastball sat at about 89 to 91 mph over the last four seasons, per Brooks Baseball. Fister indicated that he needs to become more consistent with his mechanics, the Washington Post reports.

"I’m really just dialing in the mechanics," Fister said. "There’s a flash or two of where I normally am during the game, but not consistently, and that’s what I’ve gotta get to. It’s a work in progress."

Fister, who has also had some issues with his sinker, was able to pitch 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his last start.

"I was staying back a little bit better, and that was a focus. Before, I was really getting out in front and my legs weren’t coming, I was just using all arm," Fister said. "That’s been a struggle all year long, and I’ve really tried to focus on, for a week or so, trying to take care of it."

Though Fister was able to avoid walking a batter for the first time this season, he didn't see an increase in velocity in the quality performance.

"(Velocity) is something I keep in the back of my head, just to gauge where I’m at, what I’m doing, but when I’m throwing my typical 86-88 sinker anyway, it’s all about location as opposed to velocity anyway," Fister said. "Yes, I’d love to make it better, but at this point I’ve got to deal with what I’ve got and it’s something I’m still trying to continue to get stronger for the year."

Fister is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 14:9 K:BB ratio in 31 innings.

Nationals' Doug Fister blanks Mets for 6 1/3 innings Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister earned a win Sunday, giving up just five hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out three in his team's 1-0 win over the Mets.

Fister (2-1) had come into Sunday's outing struggling with his command, as he had walked nine batters in his first four starts. However, he was able to post his first walk-free performance of the season while limiting the Mets to just four singles and one double, coming out of the game after 89 pitches (68 strikes).

"Location, fastball were the biggest thing," Fister said to MLB.com. "Early on, I made a few pitches that were up. We had to make a quick adjustment getting those [pitches] down. It was really a matter of throwing the changeup to offset the fastball and really locate the fastball."

Fister owns a 2.61 ERA and 14:9 K:BB ratio in 31 innings. He'll square off with the Braves at home Saturday.

Nationals P Doug Fister has another shaky outing in loss
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister gave up five runs — four earned — in Monday night's 8-4 loss to the NL East rival Braves.

This is the second consecutive start where Fister has allowed four earned runs. Against the Braves, he allowed 10 hits, the most Fister has given up in four starts. Fister struck out three batters and walked two in 5 2/3 innings.

Fister's ERA this season is now 3.28, aided by strong performances in his first two starts.

Fister's next projected start is Saturday against the Mets.

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister surrenders two home runs in ND
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits, including two home runs, in Washington's 7-5 loss to the Cardinals Wednesday.

Fister struggled early and often, allowing a solo shot to Matt Carpenter to lead off the first inning. Fister then allowed a two-run home run to Kolten Wong in the second, driving home Yadier Molina. It didn't get much better in the third, when Matt Adams cracked an RBI double to left field to bring home another run.

Fister, who remains 1-0 on the year, now boasts a 2.37 ERA in three starts this season. He will look for his second win Monday against the Braves.
