Rodrigues, Kang, Sanchez and Hart to start season with Pirates
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle revealed four players that will open the 2015 season on the 25-man roster.

Those, via the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, are Sean Rodriguez, Jung Ho Kang, Tony Sanchez and Corey Hart

"Sean Rodriguez is on the club,“ Hurdle said. ”[Jung Ho] Kang is on the club. Tony Sanchez is on the club, based on the situation that has kind of happened with Chris Stewart. ... Corey Hart is on the club. We have the one open set."

Pirates C Tony Sanchez could break camp on 25-man roster
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Chris Stewart's pain could once again be Tony Sanchez's benefit.

With Stewart's hamstring injury keeping him out for at least two more weeks, Sanchez will likely make the Pirates' Opening Day Roster. Also helping Sanchez is the fact he's had a teriffic spring, batting .526 with a 1.518 OPS.

"It's way too early to tell if a DL assignment will be required [for Stewart]," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "The nice part is, Sanchez has had a great camp on all sides of the game, and if Chris is not ready, we feel strongly about having somebody who can step in."

A year ago, Stewart had a knee injury that allowed Sanchez to break camp on the 25-man roster as one of the Pirates' catchers. But Stewart did have minor knee surgery and returned in only one month.

Even so, the Pirates could once again be relying on Sanchez on the roster in April.

"Our focus is on continuing to help Sanchez be ready, if needed," Huntington summed up. "And if [Stewart] is ready to go, we'll have a lot of catching depth."

Pirates' Stewart could be out two more weeks due to injury
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Pirates catcher Chris Stewart is expected to miss two weeks with a sore hamstring, which could put his status for Opening Day in jeopardy, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. If Stewart begins the season on the disabled list, catcher Tony Sanchez would likely take his spot on the roster.

When healthy, Stewart -- who has been sidelined since March 9 -- is expected to split catcher duties with Francisco Cervelli. Stewart is just 1 for 5 (.200) in three spring games.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle may carry three catchers this season
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle may be trying to shake things up a bit. While catchers Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart appear to be locks to make the team, Hurdle is considering carrying a third catcher for Opening Day, reports MLB.com.

"We've got a long way to go. We've got two weeks of baseball to go. I would think it would be an interesting concept for us to carry three catchers," Hurdle said Tuesday. "That would be very interesting. I won't say it's on the top of my list. I won't say it's on the bottom of my list."

If he decides to go that route, Tony Sanchez and Elias Diaz would be the next options for Pittsburgh. Hurdle likes what he's seen from Sanchez so far in camp.

"You've got to love the things Tony's brought to camp this spring," Hurdle said. "You've got to love the way he's receiving the ball, blocking the ball, throwing the ball and swinging the bat."

Tony Sanchez could be right-handed bat off bench for Pirates
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Tony Sanchez could serve as a right-handed bat off the bench in 2015, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"My job is to give Clint [Hurdle] a versatile bench," Huntington said. "We'd like to do that. We've not done that as well as we could have in the past."
