Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey allows eight runs in loss to Rays
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays starting pitcher R.A. Dickey had his worst start of the season during a 12-3 loss to the Rays on Friday. The veteran knuckleballer gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and one walk, while striking out zero batters in 4 2/3 innings.

Dickey (0-2) was pitching with a 2-0 lead when the Rays put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. James Loney and Rene Rivera each had a two-run homer.

The Rays then came back in the fifth inning with five more runs. The big hit was an RBI triple by Asdrubal Cabrera.

Dickey had allowed seven runs in 19 1/3 innings in his first three starts. His ERA jumped from 3.26 to 5.25.

"I don't really have an answer. Sometimes it's the nature of the pitch," Dickey said of his performance, per the Toronto Sun. "I threw some really bad ones tonight that they hit. Sometimes those get popped up or not swung at. You give what you've got and some times it's great and some times you stink. Tonight I stunk."

He will make his next scheduled start Wednesday at Boston.

Gibbons: Dickey won't have personal catcher with Navarro on the DL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters that knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will not have a designated personal catcher while Dioner Navarro is on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, per the National Post.

Navarro was Dickey's battery mate this season. Toronto called up Josh Thole from Triple-A, who is familiar with Dickey's work. He caught the majority of the knuckleballer's starts during his run with the Mets. Gibbons said he's leaning on having Thole behind the plate catching Dickey on Friday, per Sportsnet.ca.

Blue Jays' Dickey touched for two HRs Saturday, settles for no decision
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey was touched for four runs on four hits, including two home runs, in seven innings on Saturday for a no decision against the Braves.

"It's been frustrating, but at the same time I can't be too displeased with some of the results I've been having and making pitches in big situations," Dickey said to MLB.com. "I've been able to do that for the most part, but in reality I feel like I should have given up two runs."

Freddie Freeman connected for a two-run homer and A.J. Pierzynski added a solo shot off Dickey.

"It's been kind of a kooky beginning here," said Dickey. "In all honesty, I feel like I should have about half the walks that I have. A lot of that is out of your control and so you just try to fight with what you got."

Dickey will go after his first win of 2015 on Friday in Tampa Bay.

Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey allows two runs in losing effort
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of work in Toronto's 3-2 loss to the Rays Monday.

Dickey was a bit erratic on the hill in his start, with six strikeouts and five walks. He ran into trouble in the fourth inning when after loading the bases, Dickey walked David DeJesus to allow a run. He then walked Steven Souza to allow another run before finishing the inning.

"I throw a knuckleball, some would come out and they'd move a ton, some would come out and they'd stay high," Dickey said of the command issues. "I lost my release point a little bit in the fourth. They really made me work, they did a really good job of laying off some close pitches and I didn't make the big pitch when I had to."

He now boasts a 2.19 ERA and will look for his first win Saturday against the Braves.

R.A. Dickey thrives in season debut despite unfavorable conditions
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays starting pitcher R.A. Dickey battled the elements during his season debut Wednesday against the Yankees, which included a temperature of 44 degrees and periodic mist. Despite the rough conditions, the knuckleballer thrived, allowing one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.

"It was tough to get a feel for it consistently, just because it was cold and the balls were very, very slick," Dickey said, per MLB.com. "So that made it difficult to repeat my release point and every ball had a different feel. It was tough. ... Yes, I was happy with the result, but it was a struggle."

Although his final stat line looks as though he had a strong performance, Dickey admitted he was uncomfortable during his entire outing.

"Contrary to spring training, I was behind in a lot of counts and had to make good, quality pitches 2-0, 2-1, 3-1," Dickey said. "Even in that seventh inning, I got to 3-0 on [Brian] McCann and had to make three really good pitches, and thankfully I did, but that was a microcosm of most of the night.

"I was able in the middle innings there to get a little bit of a groove going, but it wasn't coming out of my hand just right, wasn't getting the late movement, but it was certainly moving enough to where they were hitting pieces of it."
