Blue Jays lose LF Michael Saunders (knee) for first half of season
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays outfielder Michael Saunders revealed Thursday he is expected to be sidelined until the All-Star break due to a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Saunders, who was slated to start in left field for Toronto, said he suffered the injury Wednesday after he stepped on a sprinkler head while shagging fly balls during batting practice, per the National Post.

“My goal is to be back by the All-Star break,” Saunders said. “I don’t see why there should be any hiccups in my rehab.”

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said the team would most likely replace Saunders, who was acquired in a December trade with the Mariners, with an internal candidate. Kevin Pillar and Dalton Pompey, who are competing for the starting job in center field, could be options since they can play all three outfield spots. Andy Dirks could also be a candidate, but he is in camp on a minor-league deal and still rehabbing from a back injury that sidelined him in 2014.

Saunders spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with Seattle. He hit .273 with a .341 on-base percentage, .450 slugging percentage and .791 OPS in 78 games last season.

Pompey, Pillar will compete for starting job in center for Blue Jays
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With the trade of Anthony Gose, the competition for the starting job in center field this spring for the Blue Jays is between Dalton Pompey and Kevin Pillar. General manager Alex Anthopoulos said Thursday that Pompey has "tremendous upside."

"The ingredients are there. He can be a complete player. He can be an above-average defender in center, but I still think he needs to tighten up some things, and he's been doing that in the Fall League," Anthopoulos said, per Sportsnet.ca. "Continue to get better with his routes, continue to get better with his throwing mechanics and not getting on the side of the ball, getting on top of the ball, because he’s got the arm-strength, and continue to have quality at-bats. That's what we like about his offensive game. He grinds out at-bats, he'll work a walk. It’s a quality at-bat each time."

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey had a penchant for extra-base hits Friday, going 3 for 4 with a double and two triples while driving in two runs in his team's 4-2 win over the Orioles.

Pompey opened his night by tripling to right center field to lead off the second inning and scored on a bunt single by the next batter. He then doubled home a run in the third and tripled home another run in the fifth. Pompey's only extra-base hit entering play Friday was a home run Tuesday. He has hit .250/.333/.500 with four RBI and one stolen base in 32 at-bats.
