Hanson was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Hanson was only expected to fill the void on the Pirates roster while Starling Marte was on the paternity list, so the 23-year-old second baseman will head back to the minors now that Marte is back with the Pirates. Hanson will look to build on the .288 batting average he holds with Indianapolis while also building up his ability to play outfield in order to make himself more appealing for a callup later in the season.
Hanson struck out in a pinch hitting role Monday. The Pirates have sought to increase the middle infielder's versatility, playing him in the outfield at Triple-A. Hurdle calls Hanson's efforts in left field "a work in progress" thus far.
Hanson was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
As expected, Hanson will be the player to fill in while Starling Marte spends some time on the paternity list. Hanson has been solid for the Triple-A club, batting .288 with two home runs, 11 RBI, and seven stolen bases, so he may be able to garner a bit of playing time in left field if manager Clint Hurdle feels confident enough to play him ahead of Matt Joyce. Unless that happens, though, he may not see as much playing time with the big league club as he did in the minors and may even be sent back to the minors once Marte is able to return, so his value might be fairly limited for now.
The team hasn't officially made an announcement, but the move could come as soon as Monday. Hanson is better known as a middle infielder, but he's played 10 games in left field this season for Indy. He's slashing .288/.309/.398 with two steals and seven stolen bases. The 23-year-old has stolen at least 20 bags in each of his six minor league seasons.
Alen Hanson , who collected a pair of hits Friday, is batting .333 in 45 at-bats for Triple-A Indianapolis.
The organization has used him all over the field -- he even played first base earlier in the week -- in an effort to increase his versatility. Still only 23, Hanson willl likely make his major-league debut in 2016, get traded or possibly even both. Despite his fine start -- which includes five stolen bases -- Hanson continues to struggle with plate discipline. He's struck out 14 times while walking twice.
