Cubs' Eddie Butler: Traded to Cubs
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Butler was traded to the Cubs in exchange for James Farris on Monday.

Butler heads to the reigning champs after being DFA'd by Colorado on Saturday. The 25-year-old is coming off a rough season in which he went 2-5 with a 7.17 ERA and spent most of the season with Triple-A Albuquerque. The 46th pick in the 2012 draft, Butler never succeeded in the hitter-friendly Coors Field, where he has a 7.92 career ERA. He was a consensus top-50 prospect three years ago, and the Cubs may not be ready to pull the plug on him as a starter. Butler has one minor league option remaining, and figures to be pitching coach Chris Bosio's latest reclamation project. If he fails again as a starter, Butler has the stuff to offer value as a middle reliever.

Rockies' Eddie Butler: Designated for assignment
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Butler was designated for assignment Saturday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

Butler was the odd man out in the Greg Holland signing and now faces an uncertain future. The right-hander struggled in 17 games for Colorado last season, finishing with a 2-5 record and a 7.17 ERA while also spending time at Triple-A Albuquerque. Given his prospect pedigree, another team might take a shot on Butler, hoping he can rediscover what made him intriguing three years ago in a more neutral environment.

Rockies' Eddie Butler: Recalled from Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Butler was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, the Denver Post's Nick Kosmider reports.

It has been quite awhile since Butler looked the part of a starting pitching prospect worth monitoring for fantasy purposes. While Jon Gray, Tyler Anderson, Jeff Hoffman and German Marquez have seen their fantasy stock continue to climb over the past calendar year, Butler has regressed to the point that he looks like a bullpen arm long term. He has posted K-rates below 15 percent at every stop since the start of the 2015 season, so there is little to see here from a fantasy perspective unless his stuff takes a big step forward. Look for him to work in low-leverage relief spots over the final month.

Rockies' Eddie Butler: Optioned to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Butler was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.

The Rockies had to clear a spot on the active roster for Tyler Chatwood (back), Tuesday's starter versus San Francisco, and Butler was the casualty. Butler was an obvious candidate for demotion, having given up 27 earned runs in 21.1 innings in June. Look for Butler to remain stretched out as a starter with Albuquerque for the time being, but there's always a chance he ends up back in a long-relief role with the big club in the second half.

Rockies' Eddie Butler: Surrenders five runs in loss to Blue Jays
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Butler (2-5) gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays.

Butler has now allowed 10 earned runs on 16 hits in just 8.1 innings since returning to the rotation this week. With six strikeouts, five walks and three home runs allowed in those two starts, it's hard to find any positives for Butler, who could find himself back in the bullpen -- or the minors -- soon at this rate.
