Rockies SP Eddie Butler hurt by longball in loss on Wedesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Rockies rookie starter Eddie Butler pitched fairly well against the Cubs on Wednesday afternoon, but he was simply outpitched by the crafty veteran Jon Lester. Butler allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four, needing 82 pitches (45 strikes) to get through the fifth in the 3-2 loss.

Butler (3-7, 4.82 ERA) was bitten by the longball on Wednesday. He gave up a lead-off home run to Dexter Fowler in the first inning, and then allowed a two-run shot to Anthony Rizzo in the third to account for all the scoring the Cubs would have on the afternoon.

"He got himself into some trouble but got big outs," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said, per MLB.com. "He threw the ball well. The home run by Anthony Rizzo got some help. The ball was going to right field today. But [Butler] did a nice job."

The youngster has made two starts since coming back from the minor leagues. He has given up six earned runs over 11 innings in those outings. He has yet to more than six innings any start of his young career.

Rockies SP Eddie Butler starting Sunday vs. Padres
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Rookie right-hander Eddie Butler will make his next start for the Rockies on Sunday against the Padres, according to the Denver Post. Butler made his last big-league start back on June 5, when he allowed six runs on 11 hits against the Marlins.

He was sent down to Triple-A following that start, but his numbers with Albuquerque have not been all that impressive. Butler is 2-2 with a 6.27 ERA in six starts for the Isotopes.

With the Rockies this year, Butler is 3-6 with a 4.80 ERA. However, removing that June 5 start brings his ERA down to more respectable 4.22. It is not known if this will be a spot start for Butler, or if he has earned a more perminent role in the rotation.
