Rafael Soriano helps Drew Storen's chances
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Nationals right-hander Rafael Soriano, who recently took some time off to work on his mechanics, didn't help his chances of reclaiming the closer role in his second game back Monday at Atlanta.

While he entered in the ninth inning with the Nationals up by four -- sort of the closest thing to a save situation without being a save situation -- he needed Drew Storen, his replacement at closer, to bail him out with two outs and the tying run on base. In all, Soriano allowed two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Manager Matt Williams recently said that having Soriano reclaim the closer role would be his best-case scenario, but as I wrote in the Fantasy Baseball Today blog, that scenario seems less likely now.

Frankly, I'd have no reservations about starting Storen in Fantasy, as good as he's been in the role.

Rafael Soriano working toward reclaiming ninth
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Nationals reliever Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless seventh inning Saturday at the Mets in his first appearance since taking some time off to work on his mechanics. According to the Washington Post, he's working to stand taller on the mound and incorporate a brief pause at the top of his delivery. Standing taller helps him keep his pitches down in the zone.

"That's why the breaking ball is better now," Soriano said.

Manager Matt Williams said the best-case scenario is for Soriano to regain closing duties, but he's not to that point yet. Drew Storen has filled in admirably so far.

"We're winning and that's what's most important,” Soriano said. "[Storen has] done it before and knows how to do it. It's a team and if you're not doing something consistently you have to put another guy in there to help. I don't have any issue with that, especially if we're winning."

Nationals closer situation something to watch
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Nationals manager Matt Williams has said Rafael Soriano is ready to appear in games again after spending a few days ironing out his mechanics. But the way Drew Storen has pitched in his absence, why would they go back to him in the ninth inning?

They probably won't, at least not right away, but managers operate by a set different set of guidelines than we do. They value homeostasis, perhaps to a fault, and this first-year manager may ultimately decide that the last couple weeks before the playoffs aren't the time for a bullpen shakeup, meaning if Soriano proves he can still do the job, he'll get a chance to.

Besides, as good as Storen has looked in three appearances filling in for Soriano, striking out six without allowing a hit or walk, it is just three appearances. A meltdown this weekend would change everything, wouldn't it?

That said, I'm rooting for Storen and, at least in shallower leagues where I have the luxury of changing my mind later, making a play for him. I go into greater detail as to why in my latest post to the Fantasy Baseball Today blog, but it's not like he hasn't done it before.

Manager: It's time to get Rafael Soriano back on mound
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Matt Williams has expressed the critical nature of getting former Nationals closer Rafael Soriano back into action soon after working on his mechanics in recent days.

"Very important," Williams told MASN Sports. "We gave him a couple of days. He worked on some things. He had a day (off) after that work. Now it's important for him to get in a game, of course. We want to get him in there and let him feel confident about the things that he worked on in the bullpen. There's nothing like getting into the game situation."

Soriano has lost the gig to Drew Storen, who is perfect in three save situations since taking over.

Rafael Soriano to get a few days off from closing
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Nationals closer Rafael Soriano will take a few days off from the closer's role, after blowing his seventh save of the season Friday night.

Soriano told the Washington Post he spoke with manager Matt Williams about his struggles, and will try to pinpoint the exact cause of his issues. He will study video to see if there are any mechanical changes he can make to get back on track, and will likely throw a bullpen session Monday to put them to use.

Soriano has struggled mightily since the All-Star break, after being essentially untouchable in the first half of the season. He has a 6.98 ERA In 25 1/3 innings since the break, with five blown saves in 14 tries.
