Heath Bell pegged with first loss in extras
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Rays reliever Heath Bell showed some command issues on Sunday and suffered his first loss of the season in his team's 5-1 loss to the Yankees.

Bell walked the bases loaded in the 12th inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. He was charged with one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in one inning pitched. He owns a 5.79 ERA over 9 1/3 innings.

Heath Bell worked with personal trainer during offseason
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Rays reliever Heath Bell worked with a personal trainer during the offseason, according to MLB Network Radio.

Bell said he's in "really good baseball shape." This is the second time Bell has referenced his workout regime this spring, so he's clearly excited about what he's been able to accomplish. Prior to the team signing Grant Balfour, Bell was one of many candidates who could have picked up some saves.

Last season, Bell posted a 4.11 ERA in 65 2/3 innings.

Heath Bell feels 'better than ever' heading into spring training
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The signing of Grant Balfour to close out games for the Rays hasn't stopped reliever Heath Bell, who was in the running for the closer's role prior to the Balfour signing, from putting in a productive offseason.

Bell took to Twitter recently to state he has worked hard this offseason with trainer Todd Durkin and he feels "better than ever." Bell also added "spring training can't come fast enough!"

Rays might open season with closer-by-committee approach
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With Fernando Rodney still on the free-agent market, the Rays are on track to open spring training and potentially the beginning of the season without an anointed closer. Though, the Rays have plenty of options, including Heath BellJoel PeraltaJuan Carlos OviedoJake McGee and Alex Torres.

While the Rays might start the season with a closer-by-committee approach, pitching coach Jim Hickey believes one pitcher should eventually emerge with the closer's role.

"The last couple of seasons, we had the ninth-inning guy, and that's what everyone would prefer. I know I would prefer that," Hickey said, per the Tampa Bay Times. "That will probably end up being the case this year, although it may not be clear for at least a few weeks into the season. Whether it's Heath Bell, Peralta, Jake McGee … Alex Torres might end up being the guy. The thing I'm very comfortable with is that we have four or five guys we trust late in the game when the game is on the line. It's a pretty good situation overall."

Though, it seems to be Hickey believes Bell might be the best candidate for the job.

"The biggest question for me about a ninth-inning guy is can he handle it mentally? Can he handle it intestinally?" Hickey said. "And the fact (Bell) has been there, done that for a number of years answers that, as it did with Fernando. You know he's capable of doing that; he's not going to be afraid of the moment."

Rays trying to flip Heath Bell
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst

MASN.com reports that the Rays have been looking to trade recently-acquired reliever Heath Bell. The Rays received Bell from the Diamondbacks as part of a three-way trade with the Reds earlier this month.

Should the Rays sign free agent closer Grant Balfour, Bell could become expendable.
