Red Sox thrilled with newcomer Hanigan behind the plate
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Unlike many teams in the new pitching-rich age of baseball, the Red Sox have enough offense to afford a defensive specialist behind the plate. And Ryan Hanigan has certainly filled the role to expectations.

That's saying something considering he led the National League in 2012 and 2013 by throwing out 48 and 45 percent of attempted base stealers, respectively, for Cincinnati. Over his nine-year career, pitchers caught by Hanigan own a 3.63 ERA, nearly a half-point below the major league average. He is 2-for-7 in throwing out runners this year, but it has been his ability to handle the pitching staff that has been most impressive.

"The one thing that's clear is his intensity and commitment to pitch called and received is clearly there," John Farrell told the Boston Herald.

Bullpen coach Dana LeVangle was even more effusive in his praise.

"He's been unbelievable," he said. "He's one of those guys you look up the word 'catcher'  in the dictionary and his name might be in there. It's all about the pitcher on the mound, it's all about trying to get wins and doing the right things. He's really good. ...He's getting himself in position, ready for a certain pitch. It might be a tough pitch to handle, he's just preparing for that. He does a really good job sticking pitches."

Hanigan is so intense behind the plate that the Red Sox are fearful of injury. He has already been hit by two foul balls that smacked his right hand, which he often leaves exposed.

Though he has not hit the ball with authority, he does have 10 walks in 29 at-bats in compiling a fine .410 on-base percentage.

Current Red Sox have hit Orioles' Wei-Yin Chen hard
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen has surrendered a .323 batting average to current Red Sox hitters, masnsports.com reports.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has collected more hits against Chen than anyone in the lefty pitcher's career, going 14 for 27 with a .519/.567/.778 line. Designated hitter David Ortiz is 8 for 21 with a home run, right fielder Shane Victorino is 4 for 10 with a home run and shortstop Xander Bogaerts is 3 for 10 with a home run against Chen. All four are in the starting lineup Monday, as are first baseman Mike Napoli, who's just 3 for 17 against Chen but with two home runs, and catcher Ryan Hanigan, who's 1 for 9 with a home run against the pitcher.

The Orioles are underdogs (+110) against the Red Sox in Boston Monday.

Hanigan also gets a day off. Sandy Leon replaces him behind the plate, batting ninth.

Ryan Hanigan snaps 0-for-15 slump for Red Sox
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan snapped a hitless stretch of 15 at bats by going one for four on Tuesday.

Hanigan had a hit on Opening Day, and nothing since. Tuesday's hit lifted his average to .105, but, despite not hitting, Hanigan has walked seven times and has a .364 on base percentage with four runs scored.

Hanigan also hit a ground ball that ended up plating the go-ahead run on a pair of Washington errors.

Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan says he's ready for everyday role
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan said Friday he is ready for an everyday role now that catcher Christian Vazquez is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, per WEEI.com.

“It’s too bad what happened to [Vazquez]. To tell you the truth, I was looking forward to playing with him this year,” Hanigan said. “He was ready and he was working hard, and the tandem we would have had I think would have been real solid. It’s too bad, but I’ve got to step up and get myself ready to play every day. Embrace that opportunity. … I’ll be ready.”
