Trading Tulowitzki, Gonzalez would be 'tough pill to swallow' for Rockies
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki have been linked trade rumors quite often. New Rockies general manager Jeff Birdich seems against trading Colorado's two superstar players, but he appears willing to listen to offers.

"We are well aware how talented they both are," Birdich told MLB Network Radio Thursday. "Thinking about trading them would be a tough pill to swallow. Though, it would be unwise for us to close our ears or eyes to any trading possibility."

Troy Tulowitzki intends to remain a shortstop
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki told The Denver Post he has no intentions of changing positions, despite two major surgeries to his left hip and groin area in the past two seasons. Tulowitzki also suffered a torn left quadriceps in 2008.

"No, I won't move," he said in a phone interview. "I will retire before I move.

"No. It's just who I am, it's what I do, it's what I have dreamed of as a kid. It's all I know and it's all I've ever worked for. So I guess when you have a dream and you accomplish it and someone tries to take it away from you ... it wouldn't be worth it for me to try to move somewhere else."

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said Tulowitzki's hip operation was a success and is on track to be ready for spring training. Tulowitzki, who had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, is still on crutches, but he's been cleared to ride a stationary bike.

"The hope is that fixing the labrum kind of stabilizes my hip so that it's not the weakest link in my body, because the labrum was torn," Tulowitzki said. "Maybe those muscles in my legs, which have been working so hard ... can actually breathe now. I hope this works, so (the muscles) don't have to take the brunt of the work."

Troy Tulowitzki proves something in shortened season
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Troy Tulowitzki's career season came to an unceremonious end Wednesday with the announcement he needs surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.

Most people who read that sentence will focus on the bad news -- specifically, three words: surgery, torn and hip. What they'll miss is the good news: career season.

Yes, Tulowitzki entered Thursday leading baseball in batting average (.340), on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.603). He's been the best hitter in the game this year, and he's done it at by far the weakest position. No Hanley Ramirez to narrow the gap this year. To use Head-to-Head points per game as an example (not because it's the only format that matters, but because it provides a clearer basis for comparison), the next-best shortstop to Tulowitzki, Jose Reyes, is 0.54 behind him. The gap between Tulowitzki and the rest of the position is like the gap between Ian Kinsler and Asdrubal Cabrera at second base.

After a slight dip last year that had some (myself included) fearing the injuries were beginning to catch up to him, Tulowitzki bounced back in a big way, reminding everyone he's the most valuable player in Fantasy when he's healthy enough to play. But of course, he frequently isn't.

Before I learned he needed hip surgery, I was prepared to rank him third, behind Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera, going into 2015. With the reminder of his fragility, I've dropped him to sixth, but I maintain that 110-120 games from him are more valuable than 150 games from a comparable first baseman or outfielder.

You'll find the rest of my projected first round here.
