Retaining SG J.R. Smith may not be big priority for Cavaliers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Cavaliers general manager David Griffin does not appear particularly eager to bring back shooting guard J.R. Smith, who has opted out of his contract to explore free agency.

Smith performed well throughout the regular season and at times in the playoffs. But he also lost the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals to a suspension and collapsed in the NBA Finals. His poor shooting and untimely fouls contributed to the Cleveland defeat.

Smith will be pursued by the Cavaliers "if it's the right situation for us," Griffin told the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith officially becomes a free agent
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Cavaliers general manager David Griffin announced guard J.R. Smith has become a free agent. Smith did not opt into his contract by the 11:59pm deadline on Thursday, officially making him a free agent, according to ESPN.com.

Smith had previously said that he wanted to return to Cleveland. However, for that to come true now, it will have to be with a new contract. Griffin did say the Cavaliers will try to re-sign Smith, who averaged more than 12 points per game last season.

Cavs guard J.R. Smith wants to remain in Cleveland next season
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

With Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith holding a player option on his contract for next season, Smith said after the NBA Finals on Tuesday that he absolutely wants to be back with the Cavs next season, reports Cleveland.com.

In 70 games this season, Smith averaged 12.1 points and 3.1 rebounds. He scored 19 points on 5-of-15 shooting in the Game 6 loss.

Cavaliers G J.R. Smith frustrated by poor play
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The absence of offensive stalwarts Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love requires others aside from LeBron James to step up for the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

The logical choice is guard J.R. Smith. He is the most explosive shooter on the team. But he is also the streakiest. And he's gone cold at the worst time.

Smith was 2-for-12 from the field in the Game 4 defeat that wiped out homecourt advantage for his team. He missed all eight from beyond the arc. He is now shooting 30 percent (14-for-47) in the series.

His self-evaluation of his Thursday performance?

"Horse (bleep)," he told the Northeast Ohio Media Group. "I put a lot on myself, especially with guys being out. You just try to do the best you can when you can. It's just not paying off right now."

Smith bottomed out early in the fourth quarter with three consecutive clanked three-pointers in a span of 36 seconds. The team prefers that he remain aggressive with his shot, but they aren't falling.

Cavaliers G J.R. Smith admits fretting backlash after bad game
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Cavaliers super sub J.R. Smith was thrilled when his team hung on in overtime Sunday night to beat the Warriors and even the NBA finals at a game apiece. He was happy for the team, but he had very selfish reasons as well.

He didn't want to live with the backlash of a terrible performance.

Smith shot just 5-of-13 from the floor to make him 8-for-26 in the series, but that was the least of his problems in Game 2. He not only committed six turnovers, but he played a huge role in a late Golden State surge that turned an 11-point deficit into a tie game by committing three unnecessary fouls that gave him six and ended his night.

"Mostly I looked at it as my fault," he told the New York Post. "I had a lot of dumb fouls and turnovers. I put ourselves in a situation for us to lose that game. I lost my focus, but fortunately I have great teammates."

As he sat on the bench in overtime, he was imagining the social media nightmare that would follow a Cleveland defeat.

"I was thinking, 'Please win this game. I don't want the phone calls, the text messages, the Instagrams and tweets," Smith said. "I don't need that."
