Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Refutes report he'll be back in three weeks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith posted Monday on his personal Twitter account that a report suggesting that he could be back on the court in three weeks aren't accurate. "Please don't believe the hype. Still a ways to go," Smith posted.

Citing league sources, Chris Haynes and Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reported earlier Monday that Smith was progressing well from a fractured right thumb suffered in late December and would be back on the court by next month, but the shooting guard's own comments suggest that's not a given. Until the Cavaliers provide a formal update on Smith's recovery timeline, it's expected that he'll still be in line for the initial 12-to-14-week projection that the team handed down in December. That would put Smith on track to get back on the court in late March or early April.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Ahead of schedule in recovery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (thumb) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a fractured right thumb and could return sometime in mid-March, Chris Haynes of Dave McMenamin of ESPN report.

It was initially believed that Smith would not return until late March or early April, but he's progressed more quickly than expected and could be back at practice in as soon as three weeks, barring a setback. A mid-March return would provide Smith with roughly 15 games to regain his form before the Cavs embark on what will likely be another deep playoff run. Smith figures to slot back into the starting five at shooting guard, but his role could be slightly reduced given the presence of Kyle Korver, who was acquired a few weeks after Smith's injury.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Works out Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (thumb) has resumed cardio work Saturday, Dave McMenamin of ESPN reports.

Smith's doctor's appointment Friday apparently went well, and he was given clearance to resume physical activities. In Smith's absence, Iman Shumpert, Kyle Korver, and DeAndre Liggins are all seeing extended minutes. Smith still likely won't return until late March or early April, but that fact that he's working out again is a great sign for him and the Cavaliers.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Hopes to resume physical activity soon
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Smith (thumb) hasn't done any cardio work since undergoing surgery in late December, but since suffering the injury, but hopes to start up physical activity following his doctor's appointment Friday, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports.

Smith was handed down a 12-to-14-week recovery timetable following his surgery, but that timetable isn't official and could even be lengthened if his conditioning remains behind the curve once his thumb fully heals. Iman Shumpert has since taken over as the starting shooting guard in Smith's stead, with Kyle Kover serving as his main backup. DeAndre Liggins will also offer spot minutes at either wing spot.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Out 12-to-14 weeks following thumb surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith underwent surgery Friday to repair his fractured right thumb and is expected to miss 12-to-14 weeks, Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com reports.

While the Cavaliers were bracing for Smith to miss extended time after he was diagnosed with the thumb injury after exiting Tuesday's win over the Bucks, an absence this length wasn't anticipated. With Smith's surgeon labeling his injury as a "complex fracture," he'll require more rest and rehab time than normal for a broken finger, with the projected timetable keeping him sidelined until late March or early April, right near the tail end of the regular season. The Cavaliers leaned on DeAndre Liggins, Iman Shumpert and Jordan McRae to fill most of the minutes at shooting guard in Wednesday's rematch with the Bucks while Smith was out, and unless the team opts to acquire another wing via trade, it appears all of those players will be in line for added run for the next few months. Smith appears safe to drop in just about every single-season format.
