Peyton Manning on if he'd want to be Vols head coach: 'Absolutely not'
Peyton Manning says he would consider being the Tennessee quarterbacks coach but not the head coach.
It's widely assumed whenever Peyton Manning retires he'll end up coaching or somewhere in the announcing booth. He feels like a natural fit for both.
But he told the Dan Patrick Show (via WVLT in Knoxville) in a recent interview he has no interest in either one whenever he walks away as Broncos quarterback.
"I'm not sure I'd be either. I'm not sure I'd be good at either," Manning said. "I enjoy teaching football. That's what I kinda feel like I do."
Patrick asked a follow-up about being the Tennessee Volunteers quarterbacks coach. And maybe Manning found a spot he could end up landing in.
"Quarterbacks coach, I would do at Tennessee. Head coach? Absolutely not," Manning said." "People in Tennessee like me right now, Dan — I don’t know why. But you become the head coach and cut that in half right away. ‘Why are you throwing it on 4th and 1? Why did you punt there; you should go for it.’ Cut it in half -- it’s like being in politics...
"Quarterbacks coach, you probably could stay under the radar. You get your quarterbacks throwing a lot of completions, you probably could stay in good favor. Maybe if they call, that’d be something."
Man. Those are some great points. No one's screaming at the quarterbacks coach when things are going wrong. First it's the head coach and then it's the offensive coordinator. Maybe the quarterbacks coach gets screamed at by fans but usually that guy doesn't see the brunt of anger.
Manning might be onto something. And Vols fans wouldn't be upset by it at all.
