Pierre Thomas does double-take Sunday with modest numbers
by Marty Gitlin |

Saints versatile running back Pierre Thomas didn't do much in Cleveland on Sunday but put up rather unusual numbers.

Thomas had three carries for 16 yards and three catches for 16 yards. He touched the ball just once afrter intermission and ran for seven yards.

Pierre Thomas remains big in passing game
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Despite rumors this preseason that Pierre Thomas would cede some of his snaps to Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson, the eighth-year running back still played a major role Week 1 at Atlanta.

He was most instrumental in the passing game, catching six passes (on seven targets) for 58 yards, but he still got the second-most carries of the Saints' three running backs, rushing seven times for 31 yards.

Ingram and Robinson looked good enough running the ball, combining for three touchdowns, that Thomas may not gain any ground there, but he should remain the primary pass-catcher of the three Week 2 at Cleveland.

And in the Saints' pass-heavy offense, that may be the best role to have.

Pierre Thomas could make statement
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Carrying the ball just three times in two games this preseason games didn't exactly relieve concerns of Pierre Thomas playing a reduced role in the Saints running game this season -- a possibility he acknowledged earlier this preseason -- but he has the right matchup to make a statement Week 1 at Atlanta.

The Falcons were dreadful against the run last season, allowing 135.8 yards per game, second-most in the league. Thomas himself took advantage in the second of the two games the Saints played against them last year, picking up 73 yards on 10 carries and 57 on five catches Week 12 at Atlanta.

That second number should give Fantasy owners hope for this matchup. With Darren Sproles and Lance Moore out of the picture, Thomas should still play a significant role in the passing game. He led all running backs with 77 catches last year and had four catches for 66 yards in one of his two preseason games. Fantasy Football analyst Jamey Eisenberg likes Thomas enough with this matchup to rank him 21st among running backs this week. Dave Richard isn't as optimistic, ranking him 37th.

Pierre Thomas racks up 79 yards to total offense
by Igor Mello |

Saints running back Pierre Thomas had another productive showing Saturday night against the Colts in exhibition play.

Thomas compiled 79 yards of total offense. He played the first half and finished with four catches for 66 yards and five targets. He took a backseat to Mark Ingram in the running game and finished with just three carries for 13 yards.

Pierre Thomas bracing for, but not accepting, decreased role
by Marty Gitlin |

Pierre Thomas was already among the most productive pass-catchers out of the backfield in the NFL heading into this season. But the veteran Saints back sees that role increasing.

Thomas also anticipates being used more as a blocker with Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson expected to have their playing time increased. But Thomas is also not ready to give up too many reps as a runner. He rushed for 549 yards on 147 yards a year ago in a career-high nine starts while snagging 77 passes for 513 yards.

"I know my role is going to change a whole lot this year," he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I'm going to do more pass protection and route running. I'm improving my route running game. I'm stll going to be running the ball too. I've got a few changes here and there.

"...The coaches are not just going to put me down and sit me down on the side. Like I said, these guys are my friends and my teammates but they're going to have to outwork me. They're going to have to put me on the bench and that's going to be hard to do."
