49ers not ready to award Steve Johnson No. 3 receiver role
by Igor Mello |

The 49ers aren't ready to declare Steve Johnson as the team's No. 3 receiver. In fact, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the team won't "put numbers" on their receivers. Johnson is fight Brandon Lloyd, Quinton Patton, and rookie Bruce Ellington for snaps this preseason.

When asked if Johnson is the third wideout, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said: "It depends. It depends. I think we'll have some flexibility there."

Brandon Lloyd back at practice Saturday
by Chris Towers |

49ers wide receiver Brandon Lloyd returned to practice Saturday, as he took part in individual drills according to reporters.

Lloyd had missed about a week, plus the team's preseason opener against the Ravens due to an undisclosed injury. He is battling for a spot deep on the team's receiver depth chart after sitting out the 2013 season.

Brandon Lloyd glad to be back in NFL
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

49ers receiver Brandon Lloyd said sitting out the 2013 season helped rejuvenate his love of football, reports the Post Independent.

"Actually, it was kind of a relief," said Lloyd. "I mean, 10 years straight. I was really enjoying the anonymity. But at the same time, this is still the career path that I love. I love playing football."

During his time off, Lloyd, who will be 33 on July 5, took on a full-time gig at a metal service center in composite tooling. He also played in a men’s tennis league in the fall, then cross country skied and snowshoed in the wintertime to stay in shape, among other things.

"I was flattered that I was off a full year from football and that there was a team that still expressed an interest in bringing me back," he said. "I feel I’m ready to compete, though. I still have a little ways to go as far as conditioning, but I'm very committed to this."

Lloyd will try to be the No. 4 receiver for the 49ers this season behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Steve Johnson.

Brandon Lloyd on the tip of OC's tongue
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

When speaking about the new additions to the 49ers offense, coordinator Greg Roman mentioned Brandon Lloyd before anyone else.

"Brandon Lloyd has been out there every day, has done a great job of taking advantage of his opportunities," Roman said before adding, "Stevie Johnson is another guy."

Johnson is among several 49ers receivers not practicing during minicamp. That's helped Lloyd land first-team reps opposite Anquan Boldin. Lloyd has impressed and should have a good chance to make the roster and perhaps serve as a third receiver.

49ers sign Brandon Lloyd
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

The 49ers announced Tuesday they have signed receiver Brandon Lloyd to a one-year deal.

Lloyd returns to San Francisco where he was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was a member of the 49ers from 2003-05 and registered a total of 105 receptions for 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns in his three seasons with the club. In 2005, he recorded team-highs in receptions (48), receiving yards (733) and receiving touchdowns (five).

Lloyd last played in 2012 with the Patriots after not playing in 2013. He will compete to be the No. 4 receiver for the 49ers behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Quinton Patton.
